Betty Jean Long, 83, died in Shawnee, Oklahoma on Thursday, February 22, 2018.

She was born on April 14, 1934 in Quentin, Oklahoma to Claude and Ada (Golden) Richards. Her family moved to the Shawnee area when Betty Jean was six years of age where she attended New Hope School and later graduated from Dale High School.

She married Gene A. Long on June 28, 1957 and after living in Shawnee a short time they moved to the Bethel community where they raised their son. Betty Jean loved her family and home and worked tirelessly in caring for both. Even after becoming ill and physically unable to care for her home she continued to extend hospitality to everyone who dropped by to visit. She could always find the “silver-lining” in every situation and looked for the good in everyone.

Gene and Betty Jean attended Liberty Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents and five siblings.

Survivors include her husband, Gene Long of the home; their son and his wife, Michael and Marianne Long of Shawnee; two grandsons and their wives; Matt and Vanessa Long of Lighthouse Point, Florida; Mason and Jessica Long of Edmond; three great grandchildren: Breyton, Sean and Lyla of Edmond; one sister and her husband, Helen and Charlie Washburn of Shawnee and numerous cherished nieces and nephews.

Special thanks to Leslie Flynn, Heartland Hospice and Avonlea Cottage and everyone who loved and helped her in the last several years.

Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Sunday, February 25, 2018 and continue through service time. Services will be 10:00 a.m., Monday, February 26, 2018 at Cooper Funeral Home Chapel with Jerry Jackson, Morning Star Baptist Church in Meeker, OK officiating. Burial will follow at Dale Cemetery under the direction of Cooper Funeral Home of Tecumseh.
