Services for Dr. Milton Delbert Simmons, Jr., 87, of Martin, TN, formerly of the Bowlegs and Ada area, are 2:00 p.m. Monday at the Central Church of Christ, Bud Ross will officiate. Burial will follow at Rosedale Cemetery.
Dr. Simmons died Thursday, June 4, 2015. He was born October 27, 1927 near Bowlegs to Milton Delbert and Doris Tanneyhill Simmons. He graduated from Bowlegs High School and received a Bachelor’s degree from East Central University. He worked for the Counter Intelligence Corps in Stuttgart, Germany. He later received a Master’s degree from Oklahoma State University and a Doctoral from the University of Oklahoma in Psychology.
He married Doris Cunningham December 17, 1950 in Ada. Dr. Simmons taught psychology at the University of Tennessee in Martin, TN for 30 years from 1966 – 1996. He was also the Chairman of the Psychology Department and the Vice-Chancellor of Academic Affairs. Dr. Simmons was a Pulpit Minister for the Church of Christ having served at churches in Ponca City, Rocky Ford, CO and Ft. Collins, CO.
H taught Sunday School at the Martin, TN Church of Christ. Dr. Simmons served in the U. S. Navy from 1945 -1947.
Survivors include his wife, Doris, of the home; two sons, Greg Simmons and wife Donia, Lexington, KY and Steven Simmons and wife Rachel, Gaithersburg, MD; and adopted daughter, Tamara Jordan of San Diego, CA; his grandchildren, Caroline and Daniel Simmons, Avery and West Simmons, Brad Simmons and Ginger Horton both of Martin, TN, and four granddaughters from San Diego, CA; two sisters, Pat Sidenstrieker of Lamar, CO and Reva Snodgrass of Perry; and two brothers, Frank Simmons and Scott Simmons both of Oklahoma city.
He was preceded in death by a son, Philip Simmons.
