Barbara Lee Shirley, 78, of Choate Prairie Community, died Friday, September 5, 2014 at her residence. The family will receive visitors from 6-8 p.m. on Sunday at Bishop Funeral Service. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, September 8 at the First Church of the Nazarene with Rev. J.T. Carnell, Rev. Clifford Joines, and Rev. Orville Hood officiating. Interment will be at Turner Cemetery. Service arrangements are under the direction of Bishop Funeral Service. Barbara Lee Black Shirley was born March 31, 1936 in Fresno, California to Clarence Haskell Black, Sr. & Alma Nadean Luker. She moved with her family to Atwood at Christmas time in 1939, where she graduated from Atwood High School. Shortly after graduation she married Wilbur Dale Shirley at her grandparents’ home on May 11, 1954. She was an active church member all her life. She was a member of the First Church of Nazarene in McAlester. She was a Sunday school teacher & VBS teacher. During her church service she was also a pianist, organist and keyboardist. She thoroughly enjoyed music. She worked alongside her husband in California as a beekeeper. After moving to Indianola in 1971 they farmed and ranched. Through the years she loved to sew and made numerous clothes for all members of the family. She produced a large garden until later years, when her knees kept her from it. She loved to go shopping with anyone but especially with her daughter and granddaughters. Cooking and baking were a major part of her life. No one ever went away with an empty stomach. Family and friends were always welcome for Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas and birthdays: She was also known as Granny Clampett for her doctoring skills. She was a devoted daughter, wife, mother and grandmother. Kids in her grandkids classes would call her Granny Barbara also. She was very much loved by her family but also by so many others. Survivors include her husband: Wilbur Dale Shirley of the home; sons: Johnny Dale Shirley & wife, Ronda of Indianola, Roger Lee Shirley, Sr & wife, Michelle of Indianola; daughter: Leslie Annette (Shirley) White & husband, Jimmy of McAlester; sister: Sharon Black; sisters-in-law: Eva Black & Florance Howard. Also, grandchildren: Justin Dale Shirley & wife, Amanda, Vernetta Lynn Shirley, Christopher Duane Shirley & wife, Dena, Leslie Nichol White, James Dailey White, Roger Lee Shirley, Jr.; great-grandchildren: Mackenzie Dawn & Clayton Haskell Shirley, Cooper & Maci Mitchell, Carson Grant Shirley; and numerous nephews & nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents: C.H., Sr. & Nadean Black; brothers: Hack Black, Jr. & Wendell Black; brothers in-law: Roy Shirley, Joe Shirley, & Jessie Howard; and sisters-in-law: Katy Shirley and Fondzine Shirley. Pallbearers will be Justin Shirley, Chris Shirley, Vernetta Shirley, Roger Shirley, Jr., Leslie White, James Dailey White, Clayton Shirley, and Carson Shirley. Honorary pallbearers will be Janice Clagg, Judy Fleming, Deletta Washburn, Imogene Harrington, and Barbara Hayes.
