Leona Lawson, 79, of Canadian, died Sunday, June 14, 2015, at her home. Born Jan. 4, 1936, in Clinton, she was the daughter of Thomas Clayborn and Essie Irene Green Wallis. She lived in the Peaceable area as a child and attended Savanna schools. She married Vernon Lawson on April 13, 1952, in McAlester. She attended Irene's Beauty College in Muskogee and was a hairdresser. She then attended Eastern Oklahoma State College and East Central State University where she received her bachelor's degree in psychology. She volunteered at McAlester Regional Health Center and was a Pink Lady and she also volunteered at local nursing homes. She was a member of Church of God (Seventh Day) and was the first female deacon at her local church. She always attended the basketball and baseball games of her grandchildren. Survivors include her husband, Vernon Lawson, of the home; son and daughter-in-law, Don and Kathy Lawson, Jasper, Arkansas; daughter and fiance, Rose Holland, of Canadian, and Steve Hodges, Ozark, Arkansas. Also, grandchildren and spouse, Keely Holland, Ozark, Arkansas, Benjamin and Sarah Holland, Ottawa, Kansas, John Holland Jr. and his lady friend, of Edmond, and Victoria Proctor, of Norman, Dr. Bradley and Amanda Holland, of Fort Gibson, Jermey and Christy Lawson, Harrison, Arkansas, and Rebekah and Richard Everhart, Moberly, Missouri. And great-grandchildren, Aidan Lawson, Alton Lawson, Evan Lawson, Isabella Lawson, Noah Everhart, Faith Everhart, Gaige Adkins, Paige Johnson, Coby Holland, Cherokee Holland, Dakota Holland and Easton Holland. Also, brother, Donald Wallis, San Diego, California; sister, Shirley Blevins, of McAlester; brother-in-law and spouse, Bill and Carol Lawson, of Canadian, and two sisters-in-law, Nellie Wallis, of McAlester, Virginia Wallis, of McAlester, and Linda Lawson, of Indianola. She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Tony Wallis, Tom Wallis and Doyle Wallis, and a sister, Linda Payne. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Bishop Chapel of Memories with Pastor Wesley Walker and the Rev. G.C. Gray officiating. Burial will be at Tannehill Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Bishop Funeral Service of McAlester. Pallbearers will be Larry Taylor and five grandsons, Benjamin Holland, Jermey Lawson, John Holland Jr., Bradley Holland and Richard Everhart. Honorary pallbearers will be Bill Muncy, L.E. Glover, Gomer Taylor and Wayne Chandler.
