Chaney-Harkins Funeral Home
Submitted by: Carol Spear Rice
Earl Wayne Stephens, known as Wayne to his friends and family, passed away on April 4, 2025, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, at the age of 77. Born on February 27, 1948, in Carthage, Missouri, Wayne was a man of honor, humor, and profound love for his family.
Wayne's early years were spent in Stockton, California, where he attended Franklin High School and graduated with the Class of 1967. Shortly after graduation, he answered the call of duty and joined the United States Marine Corps. Wayne served his country with distinction, including a tour in Vietnam, and received an honorable discharge on September 30, 1969.
Upon returning from service, Wayne married his sweetheart, Madeline O'Donnell, on October 15, 1969. Together, they built a life filled with love and laughter. Wayne's career at Delta College in Stockton was marked by dedication and hard work until his retirement. In 2008, Wayne and Madeline relocated to Stuart to bask in the joys of retirement and to be closer to their beloved daughter, son-in-law, and grandchildren.
Wayne's life was a testament to the joy of simple pleasures. He was an avid bowler, a patient fisherman, and an enthusiastic hunter. His infectious laughter and onery spirit made him the heart of any gathering. Wayne had a knack for teasing and joking around, always lightening the mood and bringing smiles to the faces of those around him.
Above all, Wayne was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his devoted wife of 55 years, Madeline Stephens, of the home; his daughter and son-in-law, Shelly and Jon Anderson; his cherished grandchildren, Lori Geitner, Carla Stephens, Jonathan Anderson, Anthony Anderson, and Rowdy Anderson; and his adored great-grandchildren, Issac, Kayden, Isabella, Brinley, Rhyland, Aubree, Aaliyah, Ember, and Kenneth, Jr. Wayne's legacy of love and laughter will live on through his family, including numerous nieces, nephews, and a host of friends who became family over the years.
Preceding him in death were his son, Earl Wayne Stephens, Jr.; his great-grandson, Kenneth Stephens; his parents, Earl A. Stephens and Mary M. (Hole) Stephens; his brother, Larry Spence, Sr.; and his sister, Mary Stephens. Each of them held a special place in his heart, and he carried their memories with him always.
Wayne's life journey was marked by courage, service, and a commitment to his family. His absence will be deeply felt by all who knew and loved him. Yet, the stories of his teasing, the memories of his laughter, and the warmth of his love will continue to bring comfort and joy to those he left behind.
A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 9, 2025 at the First Baptist Church of Stuart with Brother Jerry Hollaway officiating. The burial will follow at Pryor Cemetery in Stuart.
Pallbearers will be Jonathan Anderson, Anthony Anderson, Patrick Swboni, Rowdy Anderson, Jon Anderson, Bill Kishi, and Abraham Lopezzamora.
