Robert Lee Edwards, 89, of McAlester, died Monday, October 20, 2014 at his residence. A graveside service was held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 21 at the North Town Cemetery with Rev. James Crowson officiating. Military honors were provided by the Robert B. Thomas, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1098. Service arrangements were under the direction of Bishop Funeral Service. Robert was born to Robert and Ula (Hill) Edwards on June 14, 1925 in Mena, Arkansas. Robert served in the U.S. Navy and was a World War II veteran. He married Roberta Ann Carriger June 1, 1962 in McAlester. He taught at Canadian School for over 35 years and served as the Canadian Elementary School principal before retirement. Survivors include his sister-in-law: Bobbie June Carriger of the home; nieces: Janet Gleese and husband, Tom of McAlester, Debbie Paulk and husband, David of Blanchard; nephew: Billy Joe Carriger and wife, Pat of Fort Worth, Texas; great-nieces: Kristina Oley and husband, Rick of McAlester, Karla Sheffield of McAlester, Krystal Gleese of Oklahoma City, Linda Ware of Arkansas; and numerous other family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents: Robert and Ula Edwards, and his wife of 52 years: Roberta Ann Edwards. Pallbearers were Tom Gleese, John Gleese, Larry Finamore, and James Hoover.
