Carmelita Weabe, 95, of McAlester, passed away on April 16, 2026.
A memorial celebrating her life will be 10:00 a.m. on May 1st 2026 at the Crowder Church of Christ with Minister Aaron Austin officiating. In accordance with Carmelita's wishes, her ashes will then be interred at Massey Cemetery.
Carmelita was born on January 23, 1931 in Massey, Oklahoma to James Elbert and Ethel Lottie (Bristow) Jameson. She attended public schools at Massey, Crowder and graduated from Haileyville High School in 1949. As a teenager, Carmelita was baptized into the Lord's Church along with her cousins, Jacqueline (Bristow) Morgan, and Charlotte (Landers) Nixon at the Church of Christ in McAlester, Oklahoma.
She married J.C. Harvey in McAlester in 1951, and they moved to the San Francisco Bay area in California. While they lived there, she was a homemaker and the proud mother of three children, Candace, James, and Timothy. The family returned to McAlester, Oklahoma in the late 1950's and she was employed by First National Bank.
In 1966 she started working at the U.S. Naval Ammunition Depot as a Clerk Typist, then as a Computer Scheduler. She later became the first Federal Women's Program Coordinator. In 1976 she was promoted to the position of Equal Employment Opportunities Officer at the Army Ammunition Plant in McAlester. During her time there, she worked to get Day Care established at this facility. She held this position until her retirement. Also, during this time, she completed studies with The University of Oklahoma, enabling her to obtain her Bachelor of Liberal Studies Degree in 1974.
Carmelita was very civic minded and was Vice President of the McAlester Business and Professional Women's Club and was chosen Woman of the Year in 1978. She was also a member of the NAACP, Secretary of the Crowder Senior Citizen Center, and Secretary of the Massey Cemetery Association. Another milestone in her life occurred on February 12, 1993, when she married John Weabe. For years they enjoyed their retirement living on the lake and traveling throughout the United States.
She is survived by her children, Candace Whinery and her husband Jack of Claremore, James Harvey and his wife Susan of McAlester, and Timothy Harvey of Bristow Point; 5 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; 4 great-great grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Carmelita was preceded in death by her husband John; her parents; brother Jack Jameson; four sisters, Wanda Smith, Gladys Day, Billie Calandra, and Mollie Shannon.
