Omer Lee Sheppard, 83, of Hartshorne, died Saturday, March 7, 2015 at Beare Manor in Hartshorne. The family will receive visitors on Monday, March 9, 2015 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Bishop Chapel of Memories. A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 10 at Bishop Chapel of Memories with Steve Weeks officiating. Interment will be at Indianola Cemetery. Service arrangements are under the direction of Bishop Funeral Service. Born July 16, 1931 in Indianola to Omer Sheppard and Mary C. Thomas, Omer was the sixth of seven children. He grew up and attended school in Indianola. After school he met and married Bobbie Freda Weeks on April 10, 1950. Omer worked for the Santa Fe Railroad in Topeka, Kansas, and he and his wife made their home there. Omer and Bobbie raised two daughters: Judith Ann Meffard and Freda Jenelle Sheppard. In later years after retirement from the railroad, Omer bought two service stations. The first was located on South 75 highway by Forbes Air Force Base and the second on College Avenue close to Washburn University. He operated his service stations for many years and it was known as Omer's Super Oil Company. Omer was a mason and a member of Orient Lodge #51 of Topeka. Omer played baseball for the Topeka Reds men's summer league several years until life became too busy. He was an avid sports fan and loved Sunday afternoon football. He enjoyed working in his yard and flower beds and feeding the birds. He was also a gardener and liked to grow fruits and vegetables. After early retirement he and Bobbie moved back to the McAlester area. They spent many hours doing volunteer work in the community. He was awarded a certificate from the City of McAlester for 10 years of community service. Omer was a member of the Church of Christ and served as deacon at the Crowder Church many years. Survivors include his wife: Bobbie Freda (Weeks) Sheppard of the home; daughters and sons-in-law: Judy Young and husband, Gary of Hartshorne, Jenelle Lott and husband, Dean of Topeka; grandchildren: Mark Gabriel and wife, Kera of Plano, Texas, Mandi Holt and husband, Charles of Scipio, Megan McGinnis and life partner, Maxine Bolte of Topeka, Lindsey Young Wyatt and life partner, Luis Da Villa of McAlester. Also, great-grandchildren: Ashley Morgan Gabriel, Ryan Lee Gabriel, Keaton Presley Gabriel, John Tyler Perry, Kristen Michelle Perry, Eston Lee Wyatt, Emma Elizabeth Wyatt, Michael Lee Bolte, Andrew James Bolte, Paige Jacqueline Holt, Caleb Edward Holt; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: J.E. and Carol Weeks, Liz and Earl Medley, Earl and Gerrie Weeks, Oben and Sharon Weeks; special friend: Sonny Godwin; and numerous nieces, nephews, and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents: Omer and Mary Sheppard; sisters: Lillian, Hattie Mae, and Lucille; brothers: Lonnie, Earnest, and James; three sisters-in-law; and three brothers-in-law. Pallbearers will be James Roy Sheppard, Ronnie Gene Sheppard, Ronald Mark Gabriel, and John Tyler Perry. Honorary pallbearers will be J.E. Weeks, Earl Weeks, Oben Weeks, and Ed Medley.
