Ben Paul Choate Sr.


CHOATE Ben P., Sr., 88, McAlester, Ok., died Jan. 22, 1992. He was born Aug. 23, 1903 at Spring Hill, near the Choate Prairie Community bearing the family name, in Indian Territory, later Pittsburg County, Ok. He was the son of William F. Choate and Mary Elizabeth Piepgrass Choate and was part Choctaw Indian. His grandfather, George W. Choate, was a pioneer Tobucksy County Judge, who later served as a judge of the Choctaw Supreme Court. His grandmother, Eliza Wade Choate, was a founder of the Choate Prairie Baptist Church, which Ben, Sr. joined at an early age. His mother served as a missionary and teacher in Indian Territory. Mr. Choate was a former member of the House of Representatives of Oklahoma from Pittsburg County. He attended McAlester schools and was a graduate of the MHS class of 1925. He attended Oklahoma A&M College in Stillwater. In 1926 he married Frances Fechtel. During his active years he owned his own abstract company in Stillwater and served on the city council of Stillwater and as Payne County Election Board Secretary and Tag Agent. He later worked for the Okla. Tax Commission, Oklahoma City Urban Renewal Authority and the Okla. Department of Human Services. Survived by his wife, Frances Choate of McAlester; son and daughter-in-law, Ben P. Choate, Jr. and Jackye of Tulsa; son-in-law, Herbert Ahn of Huntington Beach, Ca.; grandson, Dr. B. Paul Choate III of Colorado Springs, Co.; 7 great grandchildren; a sister, Mary Elizabeth Poorman of Truth or Consequences and Albuquerque, N.M.; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Amysue Choate Ahn in 1983. Graveside services will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 25 at the Choate Prairie Cemetery, Bill Edwards officiating. Honorary bearers: Bill Clark, Roy Bynum, Jr., Richard Cornish, Fred Ramsey, Harley Vinters, Houston "Bus" Hill. The family requests that memorial donations be made to the Choate Prairie Baptist Church. Arrangements by Mills Funeral Home, McAlester, Ok.
