July 9, 1917 ~ January 31, 2008


Phillip Ralph Nettles, 90, of Stillwater, died Thursday, Jan. 31, 2008, in Stillwater. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in Strode Funeral Home Chapel with Terry Klein and grandson, Bill Teel, officiating. Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Strode Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

He was born July 9, 1917, in Gatewood, Mo., to John Pinkston Nettles and Martha Bell [Underwood] Nettles. He married Margaret Luvina Jane Sumner July 15, 1939, in Perkins. She preceded him in death Aug. 17, 2003.

He attended Baker Den School in Missouri before moving to Oklahoma with his family where he attended Mount Vernon School. He worked as a farmer, welder and oilfield worker before working as a foreman for Vassar Manufacturing Company for five years. He later worked as a dairy farmer for 12 years, as a heavy equipment operator for Payne County and as a deputy for Frank "Pistol Pete" Eaton.

For 19 years, he entertained area nursing home residents as part of the "Old Timer's Group," playing fiddle and guitar music. He was a loving father, grandfather and great grandfather and will be greatly missed. He was a good storyteller and everyone loved to hear him tell tales about his life.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, one son, James Ralph Nettles; one grandson, Pat Russell King; 16 brothers and sisters and one son-in-law, John Teel.

He is survived by one son, Raymond Nettles and his wife, Florence, of Perkins; three daughters, Martha Hicks and her husband, Lloyd, of Skiatook, Emma Jane Dale and her husband, Jerry, of Stillwater and Carlyon King and her husband, Pat, of Stillwater; one daughter-in-law, Jenny Busch of Stillwater; 13 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren, two brothers, Dwayne Nettles of Texas and Buford Nettles of Texas and two sisters, Grace Hager of Oklahoma City and Martha Mayberry of Pawhuska.
