September 2, 1926 ~ January 24, 2001


Dr. Wendell R. Gwinn, 74, died Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2001, at Stillwater Medical Center.

Services, with Rev. Matt Miles and Dr. Charles Wood presiding, will be Monday at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Strode Funeral Home is directing the arrangements.

He was born in Roebuck, S.C., Sept. 2, 1926, to E. West and Ila J. (Wofford) G. Gwinn. He married Leona Baker March, 16, 1951, in Clinton, Tenn.

He attended schools and graduated from high school in Roebuck. He entered the Army in 1944, and as a member of the Air Corps., served overseas with the occupational forces in the Philippines and Guam until 1947.

In 1948 he received his bachelor's degree in engineering from Clemson University. He came to Stillwater in 1956 and worked as project leader at the Stillwater Hydraulics Lab.

While in Stillwater he received his masters and doctorate in civil engineering and hydraulics. He retired in 1982.

In 1983 Colorado State University posted him to Islamabad, Pakistan with the World Bank. He served in that post for two years. In 1986 Colorado State University and USAID moved him to Cairo, Egypt.

He and his wife enjoyed attending Elder Hostels and traveling the world. He loved photography and was a photographer for many work projects. He also enjoyed working with computers. He was very involved with and held many offices in his church and enjoyed singing in the church's choir.

He was a member of the Evening Rotary Club and Centennial Fellowship Class of the First Baptist Church.

He was predeceased by his parents.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Neil Gwinn and his wife, Janet, of Westmont, Ill., and Kenneth Gwinn and his wife Diane, of Cedar Crest, N.M.; two daughters, Sharon Robertson and her husband, Charles, of Linville Falls, N.C. and Julia Gwinn, of Marlbourgh, Mass; one grandchild, T.C. Gwinn, of Westmont, Ill.; and one sister Marguerite Hayes and her husband, Robert Hayes, of Roebuck, S.C.

Pallbearers will be Gerald Bradshaw, Jerry Rackley, Joe Hughes, Max Craighead, Chuck Thomas and Charles Rice. Honorary pallbearers will be the deacons of the First Baptist Church.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, Oklahoma Affiliate, 3545 N.W. Street, number 400C, Oklahoma City, OK 73112 or the First Baptist Church, Organ Fund, 701 S. Duncan, Stillwater, OK 74074.
