Elwood James "Woody" Goeringer

E.J. "Woody" Goeringer, 69, died Monday, Oct. 28, 2002, at his home in Stillwater. Services will be Thursday at 10 a.m. at St. Johns Catholic Church under the direction of Colonial Chapel Funeral Home. There will be a private burial service at a later date.

He was born Sept. 17, 1933, to James Ellwood and Helen "Mitzi" Goeringer in Wilksborough, Penn. He moved to Oklahoma City with his family, where he graduated from Central Catholic High, now McGuiness High School. He won the Golden Glove Championship while in high school.

He served in the Army from 1949 to 1950 in the 45th division of the National Guard at age 16. He served again, from 1955 to 1958, after three years of college at Oklahoma A&M. While in the Army, he had an extensive boxing career including winning "Northeast Overseas Command Championship."

He married L. Irene "Rene" Goeringer in 1958 in Ozark, Ala. They returned to Stillwater so he could complete his degree in business at Oklahoma State, graduating in 1959.

After obtaining his degree, he worked for Mass. Mutual Life Ins. Co. and later Connecticut Mutual Life Ins. Co. as a special agent and then as a general agent. He had a general agency with Indianapolis Life Ins. Co. He obtained his CLU and ChFC and in 1970, he opened Goeringer Insurance Agency which continued until his death.

In 1986, after an interest in real estate, he obtained his real estate license and later his brokers license. In 1987, he started The Global Real Estate School where he has been teaching real estate licensing courses, Advanced Sales courses and brokers courses ever since.

In 1993, he joined the Century 21 Global Realtor Agency and "family" as a real estate broker. He has been a member of the C21 Masters Club since 1993 and a Multi-Million Dollar Producer every year since.

He was a life member of the Elks Lodge 1859 where he served as secretary for 12 years and past exalted ruler. He was a charter member, fourth degree knight and past grand-knight of the Knights of Columbus 5266.

His involvement in the local community of Stillwater allowed him to serve as president of Stillwater Estate Planning Council, Stillwater Country Club Homeowners, Stillwater Life Underwriters Association and Stillwater Board of Realtors. He served on the Metropolitan Area Planning Commission and United Way Board of Directors. He was finance committee chairman at St. John University Parish and served on dozens of other charitable and civic boards. He was a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon Alumni Association and served as chapter counselor for 16 years.

He gave the initial funding for the Christi Goeringer Scholarship Fund that allows young female high school graduates the chance at a scholarship they might not otherwise have a chance to obtain.

He was an avid golfer. He ate, breathed and dreamed golf. On Wednesdays, when he told the folks at Century 21 Global that he was going to go appraise some land, those that knew him well, knew he was playing golf with his long time golfing buddies.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his daughter, Christi Goeringer Johnston.

He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Rene; his daughter, Susan; two sons, James and his wife, Kim and William and his wife Judy; six grandchildren, Misty, Mequette, Todd, Kelly, Will, Kate; one great-grandson, Daniel; and three sisters, Marylou Walker of Stillwater, Patti Shea and her husband Jerry of Stratford, Conn. and Linda Rowell and husband John of Dublin, Ga.
