Esther Dawson, 87, of Stillwater, died on Sunday, Aug. 3, 2008, in Stillwater. Private family interment will be held in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Strode Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

She was born on Sept. 14, 1920, in Seattle, Wash., to Robert Jones and Sylvia [Close] Jones. She married Charles Twombly in 1942 in Reno, Nev. They had two sons, Charles and James. She later married Ray Dawson in 1958 in Carson City, Nev. He preceded her in death on Oct. 3, 1982.

She graduated from high school in Salem, Ore., in 1938 and moved on to higher education in Sacramento, Calif. After her marriage to Mr. Twombly, the couple owned and operated a logging operation in Oregon and Washington.

After Mr. Twombly's death, she became a working single parent, working as a professional writer and poet, roving newspaper reporter and editor. She won three poetry contests with her poetry. She was an English major, but she studied and spoke the French, German and Spanish languages. She also was a debate judge for high school debate teams while in Washington.

She lived in San Diego, Calif., after her marriage to Ray Dawson, where he worked for Kaiser Shipbuilding as a senior metallurgist. He retired in 1976 and they moved to Stillwater permanently. She had been a real estate agent and specialized in selling vacation properties. Throughout the years, she corresponded with her many pen pals throughout the world. She traveled most of the United States, Canada, Mexico and the Hawaiian Islands. She was also active in studying mineralogy and archeology. Her hobbies included fishing, golfing, creative arts and cooking. She was an active member of Project Heart and the Senior Citizen Center.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two husbands.

She is survived by two sons, Charles Twombly of Portland, Ore. and James Twombly of Stillwater.
