Marie [Smith] Canaday

Former Stillwater resident Marie Canaday, 89, died Sunday, May 12, 2002. Services will be Tuesday at 10 a.m. in Lakehoma Church of Christ in Mustang. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. in Sunset Memorial Gardens in Stillwater under the direction of McNeil's Mustang Funeral Service.


Canaday was born Feb. 12, 1913, in Jackson, Tenn., to Wallace and Allie Maples Smith. She was raised in Jackson and went to school there.She married Ewing Canaday on Christmas Day in 1932. They lived in Tennessee, Kentucky, Louisiana and Oklahoma, including Oklahoma City, Midwest City, Enid, Stillwater and Perkins.


In 1957, her husband's career took the couple to Ethiopia, where they lived for two years. Ten years later, they returned to Africa and lived in Zombia, Malawi, for several years. Canaday moved in 1993 to Mustang, where she resided until her death.


Canaday was a member of Lakehoma Church of Christ in Mustang. She was also a member of Stillwater Medical Center Auxiliary and performed volunteer work in the hospital. She loved to play golf and was a member of Stillwater Municipal Golf Club. She also loved traveling, oil painting, gardening and knitting.


She was predeceased by her parents; her sister, "Boots" Elizabeth Humphreys; her husband; a daughter, Kay; a son, Jerry; and a grandson, Michael.


She is survived by a daughter-in-law, JoAnn Canaday of Mustang; grandchildren, Debbie Yeager and husband Bill and Mitchell Canaday and wife Kathy, all of Mustang, Sherri Gipson and husband Robert of Shreveport, Jim Hitchcock of Houston, Barry McAlister of Oklahoma City and Donna Alderfer and husband Todd of Telford, Penn.; and eight great-grandchildren, Steven Yeager, Jessica Canaday, Jackie Canaday, Vicki Canaday, Ashley Gipson, Joshua Gipson, Kayla Alderfer and Tyler Alderfer.
