Services for Robert Porter Benson, 123 S Stallard, are planned Friday, Dec 4, at 2 pm in the First Christian Church.

The Rev Bill Inglish will officiate at the services, which include interment in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Strode Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Frontier Masonic Lodge No 48 will provide services at the cemetery.

Persons wishing to make memorial contributions are directed by the family to the lodge's Student of Today Scholarship Fund or the charity of the donor's choice.

Benson died Wednesday, Dec 2, 1992 in his home at the age of 86.

He was born in Carter on Dec 22, 1905, the son of Isaac and Janie [Porter] Benson. He married Mary Ellen Graves on Nov 10, 1929 in Ryan.

He moved to Stillwater after serving four years in England during World War II and opened a barber shop on Swim's corner at Elm and Knoblock in 1946.

Benson closed his shop when he retired in 1970, but continued to work at the request of customers on a part-time basis until illness forced him into full retirement.

He was a member of the First Christian Church, American Association of Retired Persons, Lakeside Memorial Golf Club, Hanner-Sharp American Legion Post No 129 and the Masonic lodges in Stillwater and Perkins.

Offices held in Masonic organizations include watchman of the shepherds for the Noel White Shrine of Jerusalem; worthy patron of Stillwater Chapter No 54, Order of Eastern Star, royal patron, Order of the Amaranth, Court No 32; noble grand, Odd Fellows; worshipful master and secretary for 19 years of the Frontier Masonic Lodge; 32nd Degree Mason with the Scottish Rite Consistory in Guthrie.

Benson was predeceased by two sisters, three brothers and one son-in-law, Kendall Dale King.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Mrs Kendall [Marilyn] King of Stillwater and Mrs Julia Gasaway of Tucson, Arix; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
