February 13, 1919 ~ December 26, 2002


Elmo George Barnes, 83, Perkins, died Thursday, Dec. 26, 2002, in Stillwater Medical Center. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Perkins United Methodist Church. Rev. J. M. Shepherd will officiate. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Barnes was born Feb. 13, 1919, to Ledru and Hazel [Haver] Barnes in Merrick.

Barnes lived in Merrick and Wellston before moving to Stillwater in 1934. He graduated from Stillwater High School and attended Oklahoma A & M College where he was active in the Kappa Sigma Fraternity and various organizations in the schools of business and engineering. In 1941, he went into defense work in Buffalo, N.Y., for Bell Aircraft. In 1942, he moved to Toledo, Ohio, where he was inspector and superintendent of welding for Willys-Overland Motor Company.

Barnes married Inez Christy Hindes Aug. 26, 1942, in Toledo, Ohio, where the couple lived until he was inducted into the U.S. Army at Fort Sill in July, 1944.

He served in the infantry at Camp Fannin in Tyler, Texas, until being discharged from the service in April, 1946. The couple then moved to Perkins where they operated a Hereford ranch, southwest of town until the present time.

Barnes was an active member of the Perkins United Methodist Church. He was a charter member of the Perkins Lion Club in which he served as president and various offices, receiving the Outstanding Member award in 1983. He was director of the Payne County Bank, a member of the Perkins Chamber of Commerce and chairman of the Payne County Election Board for the past 20 years. He served 30 years on the Payne County Fair Board, two terms as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Town of Perkins and 20 years on the Perkins Fire Department until retiring. He was a member of the Perkins Masonic Lodge No. 92 and was a past commander and member of the American Legion Post 211. He was a long time member and director of the Northern Oklahoma Hereford Association, a director and charter member of the Payne County Cattlemen Association, a member of the Oklahoma Cattlemen Association and a director of the Oklahoma Hereford Association.

He also served many years as superintendent of Hereford Cattle at the Tulsa State Fair. He vigorously supported the bonus sale and junior livestock shows, offering Hereford show calves to the young show persons with great pride, and supporting them to the best of his ability on the local, county and state level.

Barnes was predeceased by his parents; one daughter, Karen Jill; and three sisters, Frances Barnes, Elaine Crable and Eula Williams.

He is survived by his wife of the home; one son, Kent Christy Barnes and his wife, Diana, of Hulbert; one daughter, Ellen Ledru Wortham and her husband Tom of Perkins and Edmond; seven grandchildren, K.C. and Hallie Mae Barnes, Tobi, Piper, Paige and Travis Dickson and Bryan Wortham; and one brother, Eugene Lyle Barnes of Stillwater.

Pallbearers will be Jack Downey, Emil Kastl, Grover Rains, Wendell Sadler, Palmer Sadler, Lynn Kinder and Jim Black. Honorary pallbearers include J. L. Youngker, Dwaine Darrow, Bobby Paul Evans, Dicky Rogers, Dan Hubbard, Steven Cundiff, Adam Grant, Marvin Polson and Phil Manke.

Inez Christy [Hindes] Barnes
October 5, 1919 ~ February 9, 2003


Inez Christy [Hindes] Barnes, 83, of Perkins, died Sunday, Feb. 9, 2003, in her home in Perkins. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in the Perkins First United Methodist Church. The Rev. Jim Shepherd will officiate. Interment will take place at Sunset Memorial Gardens, with services under the direction of Strode Funeral Home.

Barnes was born Oct. 5, 1919, in Chickasha, to Ernest and Inez [Alkire] Hindes. She and Elmo G. Barnes were married in Toledo, Ohio, Aug. 26, 1942.

She lived in Chickasha, Marlow, Pauls Valley and Duncan, graduating from Duncan High School. She attended Oklahoma College for Women and Oklahoma A&M College. After receiving her bachelor of science degree in secretarial training, she was secretary to the treasurer of Halliburton Oil Well Cementing Company in Duncan until her marriage in 1942.

She was a lifetime member of the First United Methodist Church, where she taught Bible school, Sunday school and was active in the Weslyn Service Guild and later United Methodist Women.

She was a member of Chi Omega Sorority at Oklahoma A&M, an honorary lifetime member of the Mutual Improvement Club, a charter member of The American Legion Auxiliary 211, Stillwater Art Guild, Family and Community Education Cimarron Valley Group, Oklahoma Hereford Auxiliary, Oklahoma Cattlewomen, Oklahoma Cowbelles and served on the Thomas Wilhite Library Board for many years. She was secretary treasurer for the Perkins School system for 23 years, retiring in 1981.

Barnes was predeceased by her husband Dec. 26, 2002; her parents, one daughter, Karen Jill; and two brothers, Ernest A. Hindes of Duncan and Max R. Hindes of Oklahoma City.

Survivors include one daughter, Ellen Ledru Wortham and her husband Tom of Perkins and Edmond; one son, Kent Christy Barnes and his wife Diana of Hulbert; and six grandchildren, K.C. and Hallie Mae Barnes, Paige, Piper, Tobi and Travis Dickson and Bryan Wortham.

Pallbearers will be Bobby Paul Evans, Adam Grant, Dan Hubbard, Jim Kirby, Phil Manke and Ephraim Wall.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Perkins First United Methodist Church at 1005 E. Kirk, Perkins, OK 74059 if so desired or the charity of your choice.

Ella Nadine [Hesser] Barnes
February 24, 1923 ~ October 15, 2008


Ella Nadine Barnes, 85, of Stillwater, died on Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2008, in Stillwater. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday in Strode Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Charles Lester officiating. Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Strode Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

She was born on Feb. 24, 1923, in Payne County, to John Wesley "Ted" Hesser II and Bertha Ella [Miller] Hesser. She married Eugene Lyle Barnes on Dec. 13, 1946, in Siloam Springs, Ark. They farmed and ranched in Logan, Lincoln and Ellis Counties before retiring in Stillwater.

She attended Eureka Consolidated School 2 and graduated from Eureka High School. She was a homemaker and a member of the Sunnybrook Christian Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Chris Hesser and John Wesley Hesser; one sister, Caroline Keller; and one grandson, Jason Barnes.

She is survived by her husband, Eugene Lyle Barnes of Stillwater; one son, Robert Lyle Barnes of Stillwater; one grandson, Patrick Eugene Barnes Keeling of Denton, Texas; one granddaughter, Diana Elaine Barnes of Connecticut; two great granddaughters, Jamie Christian Cromack of Connecticut and McKinsey Ann Keeling of Denton; one sister, Bertha May Rushmore and her husband, Charles, of Stillwater; sister-in-law, Elise Hesser of Arizona; nieces and nephews, Cathey Wollenberg of Stillwater, Pam Allen of Stillwater, Tedella Stockwell of Colorado, Carol Dempster of Arizona, John Wesley "Bucky" Hesser IV of Arizona; Chris Hesser of Arizona, Nancy Keller of Tulsa and Dave Keller of Tulsa; and numerous other relatives, and friends.
