Home Stillwater, Oklahoma November 2012 Sammie [Barker Barnard] December 13, 1918 ~ November 17, 2012 Sammie Barker Barnard, 93, died November 17, 2012 in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Her funeral service will be 2:00 p.m. Monday, November 26, 2012 at Highland Park United Methodist Church in Stillwater. Strode Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. She was born December 13, 1918 to Sam S. and Annabell Barker in Erick, Oklahoma. She grew up in Sayre, Oklahoma. She graduated from Sayre High School in May 1936. She married Amos Barnard on June 25, 1936. They lived on the farm where Amos was born in Erick for 11 years. During that time, three of their five children were born - David, Becky and Ginny. In 1947, they moved to Beaver, Oklahoma where Amos began his 37 year career with USDA-Soil Conservation Service. They moved to Hollis, Oklahoma in 1948. Amy and Ray were born there. In 1954, they moved to Stillwater. A seeker of truth, wisdom and excellence, Sammie believed life is a gift from God and should be lived with joy and gratitude. She was a loving and giving wife, mother and friend whose greatest joy was sharing time and life with those she loved. She was an excellent cook and seamstress who loved to sew for her family. A deeply spiritual person, she gave expression to her faith by creating beautiful liturgical banners and paraments for Highland Park United Methodist Church, where she and Amos were members. She also sang in the church choir. A charter member of the Cimarron Valley Quilter Guild, she spent many happy hours making quilts for her family. She and Amos were members of Stillwater Wagon Wheel Dance Club for over 40 years. Sammie retired from OSU in 1984. She was a Senior Secretary in the school of Accounting. She worked for OSU for 22 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Amos. She is survived by her children: David Barnard, and wife, Patricia, of Tulsa, Rebecca Grimmaud, of Tyler, TX, Virginia Norrell, of Tyler, TX, Amy Drain, and husband, Alan, of Reed Point, MT, and Ray Barnard, and wife, Sherri, of Stillwater, OK. She is also survived by 18 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; one brother, Larry Barker, of Tucson; and sisters, Claire Cook of La Mesa, CA, and Zona Bower of La Verne, CA. Pallbearers will be her grandsons. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Highland Park United Methodist Church Music Department, 524 N. Stallard Street, Stillwater, OK 74075 or charity of choice. Condolences may be emailed to the family and an online obituary may be viewed by visiting www.strodefh.com |
