Barber was born May 17, 1917, in Waurika to E.L. and Anna Deanna "Jackie" [Britt] Barber. He grew up in Honey Grove, Texas, where he attended school and graduated from high school.

He married Ruth Pauline Briggs Oct. 8, 1939, in Roswell, N.M. They had one daughter, Judy.

After marriage, they lived in Mount Shasta, Calif., where Barber worked for the railroad. This job was particularly important during the war as his railroad transported supplies.

An accident with the railroad forced a change of career, so the family returned to New Mexico, where Barber owned a trucking business and two large truck stops in Portales and in Clovis. In 1962, they moved to Dodge City, Kan., where he owned and operated Dodge City Ready Built Housing until retiring in 1983, when they returned to Portales.

His wife died March 27, 1993, and in 1995, Barber moved to Stillwater to be near his daughter and family. He remained with his daughter until death.

Barber was baptized in Portales Calvary Baptist Church in the early 1950s and later served there as a deacon. He received many professional recognitions and appointments, including Ford County deputy sheriff and county commissioner in Dodge City. He was a longtimemember of the Chamber of Commerce and the National Home Builders Association.

He was predeceased by his parents; his wife; one brother, Pete Barber; and his son-in-law, Jack Hasik.

He is survived by a sister, Faye O'Connor of Petty, Texas; a daughter, Judy Hasik of Stillwater; two grandchildren, D.J. Gall of Tulsa and Amber Teeman and husband Richard of Stillwater; two great-grandchildren, Elizabeth and Megan Teeman; numerous nieces and nephews; and many, many friends.

Honorary pallbearers are George and Annie Bloom, Ben and Betty Staley, Eric Jansen and Marcel Muylaert.

Memorials can be made to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, 5601 N.W. 72nd, Oklahoma City, Okla., 73132.
