Russell L. Babb

Russell Lee Babb, born June 17, 1923, in Voss, Okla., passed away peacefully on Dec. 26, 2011, in the presence of his loving family in Plano, Texas after a brief hospital stay resulting from a fall.

Russell grew up in various small towns in Oklahoma with his three brothers ,deceased, where his father, A.R. Babb, deceased, was a school teacher or superintendent of schools.

Russell came to Oklahoma State University, Oklahoma A & M, on a basketball scholarship in 1941 and played for famed basketball coach Hank Iba.

In 1942 Russell enlisted in the Army Air Corps.

He met and married Mary Wood Babb in 1944 in Pine Bluff, Ark., while stationed there. In 1946 daughter Connie (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) was born. Russell and Mary were married 44 years until Mary.s death in l988. In 1947 he returned to OSU to complete his degree in Agricultural Economics while working as a flight instructor at Stillwater Municipal Airport. Russell never used his Agricultural Economics degree. He helped develop the flight service at the airport. After 38 years of service piloting the famous and not-so famous to Stillwater " Bob Hope, the Smothers Brothers, Hubert Humphrey, several foreign country dignitaries, several U.S. senators, the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture, OSU presidents, professors, regents, football and basketball players plus an array of other OSU athletes, Russell retired. Russell stayed in the Reserves retiring as a Lt. Col. from the Oklahoma Air National Guard. In l989 Russell married Arlene Walkup which finally gave him sons " Arlene.s three boys " John (Chandler, Ariz.), Jerry (Allen, Texas) and Terry (deceased). Russell and Arlene led a very full life of travel and family until Arlene.s death in 2010 after which Russell moved to Plano, Texas leaving his beloved OSU Cowboys. He spent his last days happy with his beloved companion, LaCleda Godfrey, that he met in his assisted living home in Plano. A memorial service will be held at the North Jardot Church of Christ, 401 N. Jardot, at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 24. Any flowers should be sent to the church between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. on March 24. Mary Elizabeth [Wood] Babb

Services for Mary Elizabeth Babb, 64, 1011 Edgemoor Drive, will be at 2 pm Friday in the Strode Chapel with Dr James Struthers officiating.

Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens under direction of the Strode Funeral Home.

Memorial may be given in her name to the Judith Karman Hospice.

She died Tuesday, March 15, 1988 at her home.

She was born May 4, 1923 in Fort Smith, Ark, the daughter ofL. A. and Vera [Thompson] Wood. She married Russell Babb on Sept 9, 1944 in Independence, Kan.

A Stillwater resident for 40 years, she retired as the administrative assistant to the airport manager at Oklahoma State University.

Survivors include her husband, Russell, of the home; one daughter, Connie Green, Los Angeles, Calif; her mother, Vera Wood of Stillwater; one brother, Sidney Wood, West Palm Beach, Fla, and one sister, Frances Wood, Fayetteville, Ark.

She was predeceased by her father.

Pallbearers will be Harry Wyatt, Sam Aubrey, Max Johnson, Buck Davenport, Jim Shepherd and Genio Colasacco.

Honorary pallbearers will be Bill Platt, Leon Matthews, Jim DuPree, Art Baker, Martin Loper, Chub Bellatti, Jim Bellatti, Cal Callahan, Jim Arneson and Gene Noonan.
