Charles Wesson Moore
October 13, 1938 ~ July 24, 2001

Former Cushing resident Charles Wesson Moore died Tuesday, July 24, 2001, at Vencor Hospital in San Diego, California. He was born in Cushing to Gravey Fennon and Ruby Moore.

He was their eighth child and sixth son. He attended Booker T. Washington School where he played the baritone horn in the band and marched in many parades. He also played the guitar as a hobby.

He was employed by Hugh Karsteter at the Cushing Veterinary Clinic for 10 years.

He lived briefly in Winfield, Kansas before moving to California. He first settled in Los Angeles and later moved to San Diego where he lived 33 years. He worked as an animal technician for the Scripps Research Laboratory for 15 years until his health caused him to seek other employment.

He was last employed as a cook, chauffeur and caretaker for his elderly landlady.

His first marriage was to Jimmie Lou Douglas. They made their home in Cushing. After moving to San Diego he met and married Patricia Seals who remained devoted to him until his death.

"Big Charles" as he was affectionately called by his brother, Wallace, had a good and generous heart. He was especially kind to the elderly, the derelict and the downtrodden. He would give the shirt off his back but did not like to accept favors from others.

He was most fond of children and claimed Patricia's grandchildren as his own. He was the family news connection. Although he rarely ventured far from his home he reached out by phone keeping everyone informed about what was going on in the family. He was jovial and humorous and brought much laughter to everyone.

He was predeceased by his parents. In addition to his wife of the home he is survived by six brothers, William and his wife Alberta of Wichita, Kansas, Willard and his wife Audrey of Oklahoma City, Wilbert of Gardena, California, Wallace and Winford, both of Oklahoma City and Erskine of San Diego; five sisters, Odette Scobey of Oklahoma City, Marva Morris and her husband Melvin Sr., LauraLou Pierson and her husband Robert and Mary Moore, all of Cushing and Emma Moore of Carson, California, an aunt, Wilma Freeman of Oklahoma City and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, cousins and numerous friends.

Services were held Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. in the Mount Olive Baptist Church, 1002 North Cleveland in Cushing under the direction of Davis Funeral Home. Interment followed in the Silver Star Cemetery.

Mary Bonita Moore, a lifelong Cushing resident, went to be with her Lord on Saturday, November 15, 2008, in Mercy Hospital in Oklahoma City.

Funeral services have been entrusted to the Palmer Marler Funeral Home, Cushing, and will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday in the First United Methodist Church in Cushing with Pastor Robert Adams, of the First Assembly of God Church, officiating. The daughter of the late Gracey Moore and Ruby Freeman Moore, Mary was born March 7, 1945, in Cushing, where she was reared and educated.

While living in Cushing, Mary cleaned homes and worked in home health care before she began working for Cushing Regional Hospital in the dietary department. She worked there for nearly 19 years before retiring.
