Mercedes "Frankie" [Frankin] Barta
November 20, 1925 ~ October 29, 29, 2011


Mercedes Franklin Barta, 83, of Perkins, Oklahoma died on Thursday, October 29, 2009 in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 3, 2009 at First United Methodist Church in Perkins with Charles Wall officiating. Interment will be at Perkins Cemetery. Strode Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

She was born on November 20, 1925 in Perkins, Oklahoma to Leonard S. Franklin and Etta May [Jackson] Franklin; she was later adopted by her maternal grandparents, Merit and Margaret Jackson.

After graduating from Perkins High School, she moved to Tulsa, took business courses, and went to work for Crouch, Davison, & Mulhall in downtown Tulsa. She met her husband, Joe, on a blind date, and they were married in Tulsa in 1949. Joe and Mercedes (or "Frankie" as he called her) moved their family to Perkins in 1962, and Joe was employed as a building contractor. They purchased the dairy farm in 1968.

She attended the First United Methodist Church in Perkins and was a member of the Stillwater Art Guild and Perkins-Tyron Alumni Board. She was named Bandit Football Fan of the Year in 2002, and her family was named Stillwater Chamber's Farm Family of the Year in 1983.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe; her sister, Mrs. Erma Brixey; her sister, Mrs. Patsy Bradshaw; her parents and her grandparents.

She is survived by three sons, Stan Barta and partner, Jim Jenkins of Oklahoma City; Steve Barta and wife Linda of Perkins; and Joseph John Barta and wife Suzette of Perkins; five grandchildren, Aaron, Alec, Jenna, Brandi and Nate Barta, all of Perkins; one brother, Leonard Franklin and wife, Betty of Flippin, Arkansas; one sister, Mrs. Lequita June [Weems] Savage of Sherman, Texas; and numerous cousins, nephews, and nieces.

Her pallbearers will be Steve Franklin, Clayton Franklin, Daniel Franklin, Robert Brixey, Michael Bradshaw, and Jerry Bradshaw. Memorial contributions may be made in her name to First United Methodist Church, 1005 E. Kirk Ave, Perkins, Oklahoma 74059.
