January 12, 1935 ~ November 27, 2014


Kay Burdick Tidwell Shickles, of Norman, Oklahoma, went home to her Savior on November 27, 2014 after a lengthy illness.

Kay was born on January 12, 1935 in Yale, Oklahoma to Jesse and Lottie Burdick. When she was 5 years old, the family moved to Ponca City, Oklahoma where she grew up and graduated from Ponca City High School in 1953. She went on to attend the University of Oklahoma and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education in 1957. Kay had a profound love of teaching and after several moves with her young family started what would be a long and wonderful teaching career in Richardson, Texas. While teaching, Kay completed her Master of Education degree at East Texas State University in 1974. She taught several elementary grades and eventually became the principal at Northlake Elementary School and served in that role until her retirement in 1995.

In 1986, she married Bill Shickles and they lived in Westlake, Texas until her death. Kay and Bill shared a wonderful life filled with airplanes and travel. Kay will be missed greatly by her family and friends. She was a gentle soul who always thought of others first and had an enduring love for the students she taught. Kay’s journey in this world left a profound impact on so many lives. We love and miss you Nana.

Kay was preceded in death by her parents, Jesse and Lottie Burdick, her sister Jesselois Colivn, brothers F.M. Burdick and Jack Burdick and a granddaughter, Shanna Francis.

She is survived by her husband, Bill Shickles, brother, Mike Burdick, daughter Tracy Troth of Krum, Texas, son Todd Tidwell of Norman, Oklahoma, step-daughter, Kim Cooper of New Braunsfels, Texas, grandchildren, Courtney Francis, Hillary Phillips, Kelsey Tidwell, Matt Tidwell, Ryan Cooper, Lauren Cooper, Mallory Cooper and five great-grandchildren.
