James Burke
1886 ~ July 4, 1907

Accidently Killed

James Burke, the 24 year son of Mr and Mrs Daniel Burke, accidentally killed at Sapulpa on July 4 by the accidental discharge of a winchester by the hands of a bystander.

Following are the true facts of the accident are given to us by a witness: James Burke accompanied by a friend by the name of Ed Wagner, went into a butcher shop to get a drink of water while they were standing near a party who was taking out the cartridges of a winchester, and while in the act of doing so the holder of the weapon turn the muzzle of the gun in the opposite direction. It is thought that the party did not notice the boys standing where they were, and immediately as he turned around the gun discharged, sending a bullet that passed through Wagner and afterward hit Burke above the heart.

Burke dropped to the floor and only lived about three minutes.

No blame was attached to the holder of the gun and it has been proven to be purely accidental.

Mr Burke was immediately notified of the death of his son. Friends took care of the body since he wasn’t able to get there until the next morning.

The remains were brought to Cushing on the last Sunday and the funeral took place on Monday at the Catholic Church. Father Van House having charge of the service.

The remains were laid to rest in the Harrell Cemetery.

All of the immediate relatives were present at the funeral except for a sister of the deceased, Mrs Robert Fox of Granada CO, who was ill and unable to come.

James had been in Kansas City and Red Fork I. T. for the last few months working at his trade as a carpenter and had went to Sapulpa on July 2, to spend the fourth with friends, then he intended to come to Cushing to visit his parents.

The many friends of the family extend sympathy in this sad hour of their life.
