Don J. Pershing
October 22, 1928 ~ December 19, 2010


Don J. Pershing, retired school teacher, passed away on Sunday, December 19, 2010 at Grace Living Center where he had been a resident since April 2009.

Don was born on October 22, 1928 to Dr. Alvin and Pauline Perkins Pershing.

He graduated from Stillwater High School in 1947. He then attended Oklahoma State University earning a degree in psychology and physics.

On November 26, 1953 he was united in marriage with Ernestine Cates.

Don enjoyed a rewarding career in teaching which began at Arkansas State University in Monticello, Arkansas. He finished his teaching years in California at San Jose City College and Serra High School where he was named “teacher of the year” several years in succession. Mr. Pershing, affectionately known as “electron Don” was greatly loved and respected by the many students he taught and influenced over the years. After retiring from teaching he authored and had published a book, Key to the Universe.

He was a member of Sunnybrook Christian Church.

He was a loving husband and father. He will be greatly missed.

Don is survived by Ernestine, his wife of 57 years; three nephews, Ronnie, Ricky and Randy Schneider; sisters-in-law, Ann Pershing, Opal Gayhart, Lorene Franklin, Sylvia Meyerdirk and Rosalie Mills; and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his beloved son, Jeffery; his parents; a brother, Wayne Pershing; a sister, Yalonda Schneider and a niece, Terria Schneider.

His wife “Ernie” would like to express her gratitude to all of the caring people at Grace Living Center.

Funeral services for Don will be held on Thursday, December 23, 2010 at 2:00 P.M. in the Sunnybrook Christian Church in Stillwater with Paul Anderson officiating.

Burial will follow in the Euchee Valley Memorial Park Cemetery in Cushing.

Ernestine D. Cates Pershing
October 4, 1928 ~ July 19, 2019


Ernestine Pershing, formerly of Cushing, passed away early Friday morning, July 19, 2019 in Tulsa at the age of 90 years.

The daughter of the late Jesse E. Cates and Lizzie Carter Cates, Ernestine was born on Oct. 4, 1928 in Cushing, and was raised and educated here, graduating from Cushing High School.

She was united in marriage to Don Pershing on November 26, 1953 and to this union one son Jeffrey was born. Don preceded her in death on Dec. 19, 2010.

Ernestine received her Associate of Arts Degree from De Anza College in Cupertino, CA. and for several years was a teacher’s assistant in Santa Clara, CA. While living in Stillwater she was a member of the Sunnyside Christian Church; she enjoyed spending time with her family and friends and she always had a love for children, and the children loved her back in return. In her younger years she loved to ice skate.

She is survived by her siblings, Sylvia Myerdirk and her husband Harold of Bartlesville, Opal Gayhart of Broken Arrow, Lorene Franklin of Tulsa and Rosalie Mills and her husband John of Pittsboro, North Carolina.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and her son, Jeffrey.

Graveside services: Tuesday, July 23, 2019 in the Euchee Valley Memorial Park Cemetery.
