Lee Ray Stiles Jr.

Lee Ray Stiles, Jr., farmer, rancher and dairyman, passed away early Saturday morning, May 19, 2007 in the Cushing Regional Hospital at the age of 86 years.

The son of the late Lee Ray Stiles, Sr., and Mary Jane Smyrl Stiles, Lee Ray was born on March 29, 1921 on a farm near Cushing.

He was reared and educated in Cushing, graduating from Cushing High School and later from Oklahoma A&M University with a B.S. Degree in Animal Husbandry.

Lee Ray served his country in the United States Navy during World War II and was on the destroyer escort where the Peace Agreement was signed.

He was united in marriage to Ruby May Greenwood on June 11, 1940 and to this union, two sons, Darrell and Glen and two daughters, Janice and Nancy were born.

Following his return from World War II, Lee Ray taught veteran’s agriculture training in Cushing for about six years, later working for Shell Pipeline for several years, in addition to his farming and operating the dairy business. The family dispersed the dairy in 1989.

Lee Ray was very active in both his church and in the farming/agriculture industry. He was a member of the Church of the Brethren, serving as Deacon, Trustee, and chaired the cemetery board for many years; served several years on the District Church Board on the Stewardship Committee.

On the farming/agriculture side, he served 17 years on the Payne County ASCS (presently known as Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRSC) Committee; past member of the Payne County Fair Board; his family was the W.K.Y. radio farm family for 1964; Cushing’s Lion’s Club family for the year 1971-72; and his family was Payne County Rural-Urban family of the year 1973; for over 13 years had served as President of the Payne County Farmers Union; past board member of State Farmers Union; served as director of the Payne County Producers’ Association for several years, serving as President for four years, and in 1996 was entered into the Payne County Cattle Producers’ Association Hall of Fame. Lee Ray also served on the Lincoln County rural water district board.

After the County Commissioner scandal in the state, he was appointed by the Governor to fill out the term of one of the commissioners.

Survivors include his wife of over 66 years, Ruby, of the home; two sons, Darrell Stiles and his wife Billie of Cushing, Glen Stiles of Cushing, and one daughter Nancy Chipukites and her husband Gordon of Cushing; two brothers, Bob Stiles and his wife Esther of Marysville, WA and Don Stiles of Clarksdale, MO; one sister Mary Kendrick of Perkins; three grandchildren, LaMecia Stidham and her husband Tim of Stillwater, Mona Burns and her husband Darren of Broken Arrow and LaDawn Hladik and her husband Clint of Earlsboro; 8 great-grandchildren, Kayla and Colt Burden, Drake and Tatum Burns, and Kieser and Maylin Hladik; two step great –grand daughters, Emily and Shelby Stidham; several nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Janice Stiles; one sister Gladys Lamson and one brother Dean Stiles.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, May 23, 2007 at 2 P.M. in the Big Creek Church of the Brethren with Reverend John Holderread, pastor, officiating.

Burial will follow in the Church yard Cemetery.

The family will greet friends on Tuesday evening from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. in the Floyd Family Center, east of the funeral home.
