John was born in Bedford, Tennessee January 24, 1830. His parents were William and Sarah Hancock Sharp.

John moved to Missouri around 1851 and married Amanda Frances Parks. The Sharp family stayed in Missouri about 9 years and then moved to Marion, Kansas Territory. The Kansas 1865 census finds them now in Neosho, Morris County, Kansas. Amanda gave John 8 children before she died at the age of 37 in 1873. Old John did not stay single long, for in 1874 he marries Eliza Jane Woods. She was 22 and he was 44 years old. Over the course of 20 years Eliza and John had 11 more children, two died at a young age. Around 1895 the Sharp Family moved to Pawnee county, Oklahoma.

John and Eliza were living in Cleveland, Oklahoma when he died December 17, 1911 at the age of 81. Four years later, Eliza moved to Blackwell, Oklahoma to live with her stepson, Henry Martin Sharp. She died December 10, 1919, and is buried at Blackwell I.O.O.F Cemetery. © Darrell Sharp.

John T. Sharp

John T. Sharp, an old man who had been living in the west part of town for the past year, died last Sunday at the age of 81 years, 10 months, and 2 days. The remains were taken to Maramec, where the funeral services were conducted by Rev. A. J. Dunkelburger, after which the remains were interred in the cemetery near that place.

The Deceased was born in Bedford, Tennessee, January 24, 1830. He was survived by a wife and thirteen children, nine sons and four daughters, all but three of whom were able to visit their father during the last days of his life and seven of them were present at his death. He joined the Church Of Christ at Council Grove, Kansas, in 1884 and remained that faith until the end.

It was the good Fortune of the writer to have quite a long talk with this patriarch last summer and he then said that he did not have long to live and was ready for the summons any day.

Note by Darrell Sharp: John’s daughter Nora Sharp Harris is also buried in Maramec. His wife Eliza Jane Woods Sharp is buried at Blackwell, Oklahoma.
