Katherine Kay (Thurber) Smith

Katherine Kay Smith, longtime resident of Ponca City, passed Sunday, February 16, 2014 at the Sterling House Assisted Living Center. She was 74 years of age.

Kay was born May 24, 1939 in Pawnee, Oklahoma, the daughter of Glendale Thurber and Reba Overman Thurber. She attended elementary and high school at Pawnee she attended Cottey College in Nevada, Missouri and then earned a Bachelor of Art Degree from Oklahoma State University in 1960. She was married to Don E. Smith on August 11, 1962 in Pawnee, Oklahoma.

Kay taught elementary school music for many years in Ponca City and was also a longtime piano teacher. She was a longtime member of the Community Christian Church where she played the church organ for 17 years. She was a member of the PEO organization and the Music Club. Her enjoyments were her family and music.

She is survived by her husband, Don, of the home one son, David Smith and wife Cyndy, of Oklahoma City one daughter, Kathy Guetlein and husband Col. Mike Guetlein, of Colorado Springs, Colorado four grandchildren, Kasey Booth, Korey Smith, Kourtney Guetlein and Kiersten Guetlein one great grandchild, Colton Booth other extended family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Donald Thurber.

Friends may view Mrs. Smith from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. on Wednesday, February 19, 2014 and from 8 a.m. until 11 a.m. on Thursday, February 20, 2014 at Grace Memorial Chapel. The casket will be closed at the service.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, February 20, 2014 at the Community Christian Church, 2109 West Grand in Ponca City. Community Christian Church Pastor, the Rev. Susan Payne will preside over the service. Interment will follow in the Highland Cemetery in Pawnee. Arrangements are under the direction of Grace Memorial Chapel.
