Mildred Marie Jones, resident of Ponca City passed away on Thursday, November 12, 2009 at the Ponca City Medical Center. She was 91 years old. Born August 1, 1918 in Pawnee, Oklahoma, she was the daughter of John T. and Daisy Brown Harris. She grew up in the Skedee area.
Mildred married Delbert Lee Jones on September 11, 1937 in Pawnee. In 1939 the couple moved to Ponca City where they enjoyed 52 wonderful years of marriage.
Mildred was an excellent seamstress and pie maker, especially chocolate and coconut cream. She enjoyed working crossword puzzles, giving hugs and being a part of all family events. She never forgot a birthday. She spent a lot of time visiting people in the hospital and those who were homebound. She loved to help people and never expected anything in return. God, family and church were very important to Mildred. She was a longtime faithful member of Second Baptist Church. She loved teaching the 4 year old Sunday School class for 34 years, retiring from teaching at the age of 66. Mildred loved being with family and they were her world. She taught them the importance of Christian strength, prayers and the love of God.
Mildred was a very special lady with a gentle and kind spirit who gave unconditional love. Her presence will be greatly missed.
She is survived by her children, Carol Marie Harris and Donna Kay McGinty and husband, Douglas, both of Ponca City, Oklahoma; grandchildren, Debra Puckett and husband, Chris of Edmond, Oklahoma, Paul Harris and wife, Carla of Jenks, Oklahoma, Scott Harris and wife, Robin of Edmond, Oklahoma, Isaac Lusby of Fayetteville, Arkansas, Kevin Wayne McGinty and wife, Janet and Lori Jones and husband, Kevin, both of Ponca City; great grandchildren, Layne Sargent and husband, Jarad, Alex Scovill, Claire Harris, Trace Harris, Nikki Harris, Josh Harris, Sarah McGinty, Jared McGinty, Emma Jones and Sabrina Jones; twin great-great grandsons, Aiden and Benjamin Sargent; sister, Maxcine Peckenpaugh of Ponca City; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, John and Daisy Harris; husband, Delbert Lee Jones; son, Elton Lee Jones; daughter, Tressia Lusby; sister, Esther Harris; brother, Richard Harris and son-in-law, Eugene Harris.
Casket bearers for the service will be her grandsons, Paul Harris, Scott Harris, Kevin McGinty, Isaac Lusby, Chris Puckett and Kevin Jones.
The family will receive visitors at the home of Donna McGinty, 1414 S. 5th Street. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in Mildreds honor to Second Baptist Church, 1112 W. Grand, Ponca City, Oklahoma 74601.
The funeral will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, November 16, 2009 at Second Baptist Church with Pastor Ken Newport, of Second Baptist Church officiating. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery in Pawnee, Oklahoma under the direction of Grace Memorial Chapel.
