Martin Powers Bettes

August 2, 1919 ~ November 2, 2008

Martin P. Bettes, 89, was born August 2, 1919 to Charles Virgil and Nancy Irene (Butler) Bettes. Martin attended school at Pawnee, OK and received his high school graduation certificate on May 21, 2004 with the graduating class. He was the middle child of nine boys. Martin passed away on November 2, 2008 at home after a lengthy illness. He was the only one left of his eight brothers.

Martin was an auto mechanic for the Chevrolet Garage, then later served in the 8th U.S. Army Air Force from 1942 – 1945. From there he went back to work at the Garage for many years. He met his first wife, Ocia Ingle and married on April 14, 1946.

They moved to Guthrie, OK where he worked at the Chevrolet Garage for years until things were too heavy to lift. Martin then went to the airport in Guthrie where he took his pilots training and became a licensed aircraft mechanic and later flew over the pipelines to spot gas leaks. He retired from there in 1969 and stayed home to take special care of Ocia until she passed in 1989, after 52 years of marriage.

On February 5, 2000 he married long-time friend, Nelda Siebels. She has been his caregiver as well as wife and friend and survives him. He had no children, but Nelda has three sons and three daughters and they all think the world of Martin.

He also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, friends, and one very special friend, Wayne Patterson. Martin was also a long-time member of Guthrie Free Methodist Church. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, November 5, 2008 at Smith Memorial Chapel with Pastor Robin R. Grueser officiating.

Interment will follow at Highland Cemetery in Pawnee, OK. Services are under the direction of Smith-Gallo Funeral Home, Guthrie. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Guthrie Free Methodist Church, 1124 West Mansur Avenue, Guthrie, OK 73044.
