Samuel Albert Hazen was born in Oak Forest, Franklin County, Indiana. He was the s/o John Hazen and unknown. His paternal grandparents were Daniel and Mary Hazen.
Sam married Emily Lanning in Franklin County, Indiana. She was the d/o James and Arvilla Lanning. After the birth of their first two sons, they came in a covered wagon from IN to Nebraska.
They lived there for several years before trying to make a run for land in Oklahoma's Cherokee Strip scheduled for 16 September 1893; they arrived the last week in September 1893.
The Hazen's made their home in Ponca City and later in Fairfax where Sam was a carpenter and built several of the homes which remain today.
Children of Sam and Emily Lanning Hazen;
1. Albert Wesley Hazen born 14 Sep 1875 in IN. He died 22 Dec 1952.
2. Charlie Morris Hazen was born 15 Sep 1878 in IN. He died 12 Feb 1963.
3. William Hezekiah "Carl" Hazen was born 21 Oct 1880 possibly in NE and died 22 Jan 1959 in Wichita, Kansas. He married Lillith Lowe of Fairfax, OK, d/o Julia Lowe. They had one adopted son Arnold Hazen who died in 1993 in Wichita, KS.
4. Jessie Myrtle Hazen (Dull) was born in 1882 in NE. She died 18 April 1903 possibly during childbirth.
5. Leatha Ellen Hazen was born 24 May 1884 in Pender, NE and died 8 June 1962.
6. James Walter Hazen was born 13 May 1887 in Pender, NE. He married Beulah Mae Patterson 15 Jan 1912 in Newkirk, Kay, OK, d/o Jacob Eugene Patterson and Anna Cordellia Low(e). James died in Ponca City, Kay, OK and is burried there by his wife.
7. Jennie Elizabeth Hazen (Pierce) was born in 1889 in Pender, NE. She died 22 Aug 1913 in OK.
8. Maude Muriel Hazen was born 1 Sep 1891 in Pender, NE. She married Phillip Samuel Harold Johnson 3 Feb 1913 in Newkirk, Kay, OK. They had: Harold Lloyd Johnson born 13 Sep 1920, Florence Lucille Johnson born 21 May 1915, Erna Maudline Johnson born 3 April 1925 in OK, and Robert Morris Johnson born 10 Jan 1929 in OK. Maude Muriel hazen died 15 Jan 1974 in Oklahoma City, OK.
9. Susie Bell Hazen was born in 1895 and died 24 June 1898 at age 3 in OK.
Notes:
Samuel was raised by his aunt Rebecca Hazen Davis-Barr in IN, a sister of John Townsend Hazen. John's other sister was Eleanor Hazen White who raised Mary Ellen Hazen, sister of Samuel Albert Hazen. Eleanor Hazen White is buried in Wolf Creek Cemetery and Mary Ellen Hazen Smith is buried in Maple Grove Cemetery, both in Franklin County, Indiana.
The proof that John Townsend Hazen was Sam and Mary Ellen's father comes from Mary Ellen Hazen Smith's Death Certificate and from Daniel Hazen's obituary. Their mother has never been identified. John Townsend Hazen married twice after Samuel Albert and Mary Ellen Hazen were born, but he did not acknowledge either child in his will.
Sam's sister, Mary Ellen Hazen, was born 18 Jan 1849 in Oak Forest, Franklin County, Indiana and lived many years in Brookville, IN. She married William Smith April 19, 1865 in Brookville, IN.
Mary Ellen Hazen Smith died 17 Apr 1926 in Connersville, IN and was buried in Maple Grove cemetery in Brookville. Her death certificate #12538, Registration #85 lists her father as John Hazen with mother unknown, and one of her obits mentions her brother Samuel Hazen of Ponca City, OK.

Emily Lanning Hazen

Emily Lanning was the daughter of James Lanning (1825-1900) and Arvilla Matthews (1827-1900). Her paternal grandparents were Ruben Lanning (1790-1861) and Sarah Groff (1792-1881). Her maternal grandparents were John Mathews Jr (1784-1855) and Phoebe Pond (1797-1860).
On 8 Oct 1874 Emily married Samuel Albert Hazen (1855-1931) in Franklin Counbty, Indiana.
Several years later they moved with their first sons to Pender, Thurston, Nebraska. After a few years they moved in covered wagons to Cedar Vale, KS and then on to Indian Territory hoping to grab land during the run of the Cherokee Strip. They lived in Ponca City, Kay, OK, and finally settled in Fairfax, Osage, OK where her husband built several of the original homes in Fairfax.
