George W. Houghton, Jr., a resident of the Bryant Community, was born March 30, 1928 in El Paso, Texas to Madge (McElroy) and George W. Houghton, Sr. He passed away February 27, 2008 at his home in Bryant at the age of 79 years 10 months and 27 days. He married Jackie Chancey in Amarillo, Texas on December 16, 1955.
George began his ranching career early as he was taken, at the age of two months, to Corralitos, Mexico, where his father and grandfather operated the Corralitos Ranch. The Corralitos ranch became well known throughout the Southwest as a superior, progressive cattle operation.
Through the third grade year George was home schooled by his mother. Then he attended El Paso schools from 4th through 10th grade with his last two years of high school spent at the New Mexico Military Institute at Roswell.
George served in the Marine Corps in 1951 and 1952. He then began a career in banking at First National Bank of Amarillo.
After graduating from S.M.U. graduate school of banking in 1966, the family moved to Okmulgee where George was employed by First National Bank as vice-president.
As a member of the business community, George served on many committees and boards including the OMH hospital board where he organized the Okmulgee County Ambulance Service. He is a member of the board for Bryant Community Church and for the Bryant rural water district. George was a charter member of the National Cattlemens Association, a member of the Oklahoma Cattlemens Association and a member of the Okmulgee County Cattlemens Association where he is a past president.
George retired from First National Bank in December of 1990.
He was preceded in death by both his parents, one brother, Ted Houghton, and one son, David Houghton.
George is survived by his wife, Jackie Houghton, of the home;4 children, Beth Stafford & husband Randy, Maysville, Oklahoma; Cindy Eacret & husband Jim, Okmulgee, Oklahoma;Sallie Capen & husband Chuck, Olathe, Kansas; Debra Houghton, Tuscon, Arizona; 8 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren;1 sister: Madeline Karr & husband Bill, Deming, New Mexico;1 sister-in-law, Marietta Houghton, El Paso, Texas; His mother-in-law, Sibyl Chancey, Bryant, Oklahoma;As well as a host of nieces, nephews, friends, and other relatives.
Pallbearers will be Randy Stafford, Eric Stafford, Drew Short, Jim Eacret, Gil Eacret, and Ernesto Puche.
Funeral Services will be held Saturday, March 1, 2008 at 10:00 am at Shurden Chapel officiated by Rev. Robert Hunnicutt. Burial will be at Hillcrest Cemetery in Weleetka, Oklahoma under the direction of Shurden Funeral Home.
