Harvey Smith Mercer, Jr.
March 23, 2020
Harvey Smith Mercer, Jr. passed away of natural causes on March 23, 2020, at age 96. He was born and raised near Wheatland, Oklahoma and lived his adult life in Oklahoma City. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1941 to 1946, stationed first at South Base in Norman, OK, and later in Pearl Harbor, where he served at CINCPAC headquarters working for Admiral Nimitz. He was very proud of his service and, being a gifted storyteller, told many thrilling stories about his WWII experiences. He met many of his lifelong friends while in the Navy. Harvey loved living in Oklahoma and, being an avid historian, he delighted in telling about growing up on a farm, and about his grandparent’s contributions to early OKC. He was a successful insurance agent from 1960 until he retired (finally!) at age 89. His business took him all over the state where he made many friends.
Harvey has one living sister, Patty Humphrey, and many nephews and nieces. He is survived by his daughters, Marla Barnett of Kansas City, Libby Mercer of Oklahoma City, and Conne Schween of Edmond, and he was very proud to have 4 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great grandchildren, all of whom adored him.
Due to the Corona Virus quarantine, the date for his memorial service will be announced later. A small graveside service will be held Saturday, March 28, 11:00am at the Pleasant Valley Cemetery. Mercer-Adams funeral home and the family will gladly welcome any visitors for viewing Wednesday-Friday this week.
