Naomi Maye Zellers

ENID, OK — Naomi Maye Zellers was born February 10, 1913, in Kingfisher, Okla., to Dr. Adam Ray and Mrs. Ethel (Batterton) Zellers.

She graduated from Kingfisher High School in 1929 and Cottey College in Nevada, Mo., in 1931. She received a Bachelor of Science Degree from Central State Teachers College (University of Central Oklahoma) in Edmond, Okla., in 1932. She taught biology and music in Cashion, Okla., from 1932 to 1934.

She married Claude Henry Franks in 1935 and moved to Enid, Okla. She was a member of the First Christian Church, the Junior Welfare League, and president of the XYZ, ladies auxiliary to the American Business Club. Lefty Franks preceded her in death in 1946.

In 1948, she married Arthur Henry Abernathy, and they moved to Las Cruces, then Alamogordo, N.M. In Alamogordo she was Regent of the Daughters of the American Revolution, president of PEO, and president of the Women’s Club and a member of the First Presbyterian Church.

She later returned to Oklahoma: Kingfisher, Enid, and Guymon. Arthur Abernathy preceded her in death in 2001.

She moved to Sugar Land, Texas, in 2003. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Thelma Zellers.

She is survived by her children, Georgenne Franks Dailey of Enid, Oklahoma; Carol Franks Thom of Richmond, Texas; William Claude Franks of Rosenberg, Texas; and Robert Arthur and Woomera Abernathy of Cedar Park, Texas; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
