Ruby Mae (Sanders) Hakel Young

Ruby Mae (Sanders) Hakel Young
January 2, 1937 - September 14, 2022

Celebration of Life Service for Ruby Young, 85, will be Saturday, September 17, 2022 at 2:00 pm in World Harvest Church with Pastor Brad Mendenhall and Dale Cummins officiating. Arrangements are by Anderson-Burris Funeral Home and Crematory. Visitation with the family will be Friday evening from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm at the funeral home. The service will be livestreamed on Harvestenid.com.

Ruby was the first child born to Roy and Inez Sanders (Mahaffey) born January 2, 1937 on the family farm just North of Goltry. Ruby made her descent to Heaven Wednesday, September 14, 2022 in Enid, Oklahoma.

Growing up on the family farm, Ruby loved being outside and not in the kitchen. Milking the cows and cleaning chickens was the part of her daily routine. She was proud of the fact that she could milk faster and clean more chickens than the rest of the family. Always a competitor, whether it was work, at home, on the basketball court or fighting cancer two times. Ruby never gave up.

On September 25, 1960, Ruby married her high school sweetheart, Tom Hakel and they made their home in Goltry, Oklahoma. A daughter, Cynthia (Cindi) completed their family in the winter of 1962. As Cindi grew up, Ruby served many years at the Christian Union Bible Junior Camp as a counselor and was dean of the girls. She was always a positive role model and leader to the kids. Ruby attended Enid Business College. She ran a home daycare in Goltry and in Enid for many years. In 1997, she began as a volunteer at St. Mary’s and then as a volunteer at Integris Bass Hospitals. She volunteered for 24 years at both facilities. You could bet, Ruby was the first one to show up at the hospital in the mornings and the last one to leave at night for 6 to 7 days a week. Each year, Ruby would have more hours volunteering than a fulltime employee! Everyone that came through the hospitals knew Ruby! She was a legend! Her love for volunteering was her ministry. If she could help someone or make them smile her job was complete. It was her passion! She was a member of the Goltry Christian Union Bible Church: After the church closed, she started attending World Harvest Church in Enid, which became her church home since 2016.

Ruby is survived by one daughter, Cindi Hakel of Enid; sister, Faye Reuss of Goltry; brothers, Vernon and Jo Sanders of Goltry and Frank and Kim Sanders of Enid; 18 nieces and nephews; grandpup - Owen; extended family - Jennifer Chavez, Carolyn McDaniel, Carolene English, Melisa and Doug Franks; Nana to Madelyne Griffet (Tyler) and Dee Franks; Special friends - Carole Krejci, Ann Sedbrook, Jeanette Breckenridge, Phyllis Blaser, and Anna Sullivan.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Inez Sanders; husbands, Tom Hakel and Dale Young; brothers, Donald Ray Sanders and Willis Lee Sanders.

Memorials may be made through Anderson-Burris to Anderson-Burris (to help with funeral expenses), SPCA, New Covenant Fellowship Church Building Fund, (Goltry), World Harvest Church Building Fund (Enid).
