Karen Kay Wittum, 77, passed away on Sunday, May 25, 2025 at Via Christi Village in Ponca City, Oklahoma.
She was born on October 8, 1947, to Herman Edward and Eunice Evelyn (Wise) Wittum at Wellington, KS. She was welcomed home by her only sibling, a sister, Marylyn, to the farm south of Hunnewell, KS.
Karen attended grade school in rural Kay County and graduated from Braman High School with the class of 1965, as Valedictorian of her class. She went on to Oklahoma State University, where she graduated with a degree in Psychology in 1969.
She trained in Tulsa to be a Communications Specialist with the Federal Aviation Administration. She was the first woman to receive this training in the area. She lived and worked in several locations in Texas, climbing and repairing problems in microwave towers. After working there for several years, she was transferred to Bremerton, WA, where she worked in the shipyards, living in Port Orchard, WA. After working at this job for several years, she moved back to Texas, working at various jobs, until retirement, when she moved back to the farm to help her mother.
Karen never married. She loved cats, and had many during her lifetime. After moving back to the farm, she and her mother took many bus trips and cruises together.
She struggled with the effects of Parkinson’s disease for several years, leaving her unable to drive. She moved to Renaissance in May of 2020 and later to Via Christi Village in Ponca City.
Survivors include her sister, Marylyn (Wayne) Weller, Clay Center, KS; nephews, Randy Bergman, Warrior, AL; Brian Bergman and Justin (Randi) Weller, Clay Center, KS; and 5 Great-nieces and 5 Great-nephews. Preceding her in death were her parents and a niece, Brenda Hageberg of Blackwell.
The family would like to express our love and appreciation to Hospice of North Central Oklahoma, for the wonderful care and special attention they gave her for almost 2 ½ years! Also, to her good friend, Bertie Rush, who made weekly visits.
She was cremated, as was her final wish, and no services will be held.
Memorials in her honor may be made to Hospice of North Central Oklahoma, ℅ Roberts & Son Funeral Home.
