Louis M. Wheeler, known to his family and friends as "Dick", passed away early Monday morning, May 2, 2011, in the Cushing Regional Hospital at the age of 93 years.

The son of the late Richard L. Wheeler and Corlie Dopps Wheeler, Dick was born on July 2, 1917 in Pretty Prairie, KS, and was a graduate from Plevna, Kansas High School.

He then attended and graduated from Kansas State University, where he had been active in the ROTC, and upon graduation from KSU was a commissioned officer, 2nd Lieutenant.

He served his country in the United States Army retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel.

He was united in marriage to Faye Spracklen on December 16, 1945, in Fort Worth, TX. The couple came to Cushing following their marriage and owned and operated Western Auto for over 16 years before selling out in 1964.

Dick was also retired from the State of Oklahoma Highway Dept where he had worked for over 20 years.

He along with Oliver Holderread developed the Avalon addition and was the first in Cushing to own and operate a mini storage facility.

On February 28 of this year he was honored at the State Capital of Oklahoma as the veteran of the week.

Dick was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church; Past President of the Cushing Rotary Club; a longtime member of the Reserved Officers Association; had served as the chairman for the March of Dimes for several years; he believed in promoting Cushing and was an avid fan of the Kentucky Derby.

Survivors include his wife of over 65 years, Faye Wheeler of the home; two nephews, Rick Wheeler of Roanoke, VA, and Mark Wheeler of Lakeland, FL; a sister-in-law Paige Wheeler of Roanoke, VA; one God Child Rachel Martin of Cushing, and other relatives and friends.

Memorial services will be held Thursday, May 5, 2011 at 10:30 A.M. in the First United Methodist Church with Reverend Sonja Tobey, pastor, officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial contributions be made to the Oklahoma Medical research Foundation, heart research, or to your favorite charity in his memory.
