TOMBALL, TX — Larry Wheeler, 73, of Tomball, Texas, passed away Wednesday, April 30, 2014, after a hard-fought battle with cancer. Larry was born in Enid, Oklahoma, on Feb. 8, 1941 to Joe Alvin Wheeler and Dorothy Marie (Williams) Wheeler.

Larry was a graduate of Enid High School and attended Oklahoma State University. During his life, Larry was an entrepreneur who ventured into many varied fields, from being a pilot owning his own air service company to buying and selling oil leases, to brokering yachts. During all that time, Larry loved photography and earned an award from the Associated Press at an early age. He turned that interest into a profession, working at Houston Camera Exchange, where he developed a loyal clientele of amateur and professional photographers. He also loved travel and, in his later years, was able to combine photography with travel by taking folks to Africa, Alaska and many other venues. In addition, he was interested in habitat preservation and wildlife conservation and was on the board of Images for Conservation. Throughout his life, he always was willing to share his expertise and experiences and was a great teacher to those who shared his passions.

Larry is survived by his significant other, Patricia Runewitsch; his sister, Jane Burt; granddaughter, Casey Wheeler; sister-in-law, Frances Wheeler, and her sons, Jay and Jeff and their families.

He was preceded in death by his parents, son, Michael and brother, Ron.

Upon his request, a memorial celebration of his life will be held. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Larry’s honor to the American Cancer Society.
