Glenn Mitchell Ward, (Mitch) went to be with the Lord on October 10, 2020 after a long, courageous battle with a rare disease, Multiple System Atrophy. Mitch was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma on July 29, 1956 to Gober Glenn and Tena Marie (Green) Ward. He was the second of three boys.
Mitch attended primary and secondary school in Tulsa, graduating from Nathan Hale High School in 1974. He then attended the University of Oklahoma, where he joined Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity and became a lifelong Sooner fan. Mitch graduated from OU with a bachelor’s degree in business, obtained a Masters of Business Administration from the University of Central Oklahoma (UCO) and was a practicing Certified Public Accountant for over thirty years.
Growing up, Mitch developed a love of sports, fishing, nature and being outdoors. He spent weeks at a time with his family at the lake and was patient enough to become a good fisherman. Over the years, he played baseball, football, and was a wrestler. He continued to be an avid sports fan throughout his life.
While at OU, Mitch met Marsha Winter and they married December 29, 1979. They spent the next 40 years in Oklahoma City, Yukon and most recently, Edmond. Mitch was kind and patient. He was fun and always a little mischievous. He was proud of his family and a supportive and exceptional ‘girl dad.’ He looked for the best in everyone. Mitch enjoyed traveling. Family vacations were paramount to him. He especially enjoyed state and national parks, the ocean, and tropical destinations.
Mitch was involved over the years in both his community and church. He served as an early Board Member of the Yukon Schools Foundation for Excellence; taught budgeting/personal finance as a volunteer and coached his daughters’ Little League sports teams. Mitch and Marsha also co-taught various children’s Sunday School classes.
Mitch is survived by his wife, Marsha, their three daughters and families: Jennifer (Landon) Hubbart, Whitney Guild and Julie (Jared) Wilson. When Mitch became a granddad, the family aptly named him “Champ.” He was so proud of his grandchildren: Benton, Adelyn, Emery, and Reid Hubbart, Carl Guild, and Griffin Wilson. Mitch is also survived by his two brothers, Keith Ward and Kelly Ward (Valerie), in addition to numerous nieces and nephews, and his father-in-law and mother in-law, Dallas and Mary Lou Winter.
Mitch’s devotion to his family, sense of humor, wise counsel, love of nature, and stoic bravery will continue as his legacy to his family and friends.
The family wishes to extend their thanks to the many individuals who offered encouragement, prayers, visits, laughter, meals and simply accompanied them on this journey. They also extend their heartfelt gratitude to Crossings Community Church.
Visitation will be held from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, October 13, 2020 at Matthews Funeral Home. Services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 14, 2020 at Crossings Community Church Chapel in Oklahoma City, OK. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Crossings Community Church Congregational Care and Lifecare Ministries.
