Donald Barton Turkington

Donald Barton Turkington
Jun 11, 1922 ~ Mar 10, 2016

Donald Barton Turkington, 93; retired University of Oklahoma professor died Thursday, March 10 at his home in Norman, OK.

Memorial services will be held in Norman on Friday, April 8th, at 1:00 p.m. at McFarlin Memorial United Methodist Church.

He was born in Nevada, Iowa on June 11, 1922 to Ernest and Muriel (Barton) Turkington. In 1944 he graduated from Iowa State University with a B.S. degree, and in 1947 with a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering. On August 28, 1948 he married Harriet (Breckenridge) Turkington. He was a professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Oklahoma for 40 years, and retired from the U.S. Navy as Lieutenant Commander after 40 years of active and reserve duty. Barton previously served on the Board of Directors and Secretary-Treasurer of the Norman Women’s Resource Center. He was an active member of McFarlin United Methodist Church where he taught children’s and youth Sunday school classes and served on numerous commissions, committees and boards.

Barton was preceded in death by the love of his life, Harriet, his wife of 63 years, and brothers Malcolm and Harry.

Of his many accomplishments he considered his family, children and grandchildren as his greatest.

He is survived by two children, Breck Turkington and wife Theresa; and Alice Brown and husband David, all of Norman; five grandchildren, Bennett Turkington of Norman; Brooke (Turkington) Powell, and husband Casey of Healdton, OK; Brian Wines and wife Tracey of Norman; Keith Wines and wife Julie of Wichita, KS; Amanda Collins and husband Matt of Wagoner, OK.; eight great-grandchildren; Raylon of Healdton; Kaden and Cassidy of Norman; Madeleine and Keylan of Wichita; and Makaela, Bryson, and Natalie of Wagoner.

There are no words adequate enough to express the depth of love, admiration, and gratitude felt for our dad, grandfather, friend and example. We will miss him sorely and the family welcomes any and all memories you might wish to share with us.

The family suggests that in lieu of flowers donations in memory of Barton can be made to McFarlin Memorial United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 6390, Norman, OK 73070, Norman Women’s Resource Center or a charity of your choice.
