Services for Dodson Leon Thornton were Sunday at 3:00 p.m. in the Kennedy Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Ronnie Carroll officiating.
Mr. Thornton was born January 18, 1913, at Georgiana, Alabama, the son of St. Clair and Ida Brooks Thornton, and died March 14, 1999, at Mercy Memorial Health Center, Ardmore, at the age of 86.
He and Marie Louise Vaughn were married April 21, 1976, at Hubbard, Texas. Mr. Thornton served in the U.S. Army during World War II and received the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with 3 Bronze Stars and Bronze Arrowhead, American Defense Medal, American Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Purple Heart and the World War II Victory Medal. A retired sign painter, he was a member of the Woodmen of the World of Mobile, Alabama, a crime watcher in Waxahachie, Texas, and a member of the Christ Tabernacle Church of Marietta.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Marie Thornton of the home in Marietta; three sons, Dodson Thornton of Metairie, Louisiana, Chris Thornton of Mobile, Alabama, and Eddie Cooper of Corsicana, Texas; six daughters, Linnie Baird of Houston, Texas, Bama Rider of Bay Minette, Alabama, Joyce Hendrix of Dallas, Texas, Gaynelle Pugh and Carolyn Warren of Marietta, and Bonnie Richard of Waxahachie; a sister, Pauline Pendleton of Deland, Florida; 28 grandchildren, 48 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mr. Thornton was preceded in death by a son, Jonathan Thornton; and two brothers, Onnie Presley and Elmer Presley.
Services were under the direction of Kennedy Funeral Home. Interment was in Cooper Cemetery, Rosinton, Alabama.
