Harold L. Thorne

September 6, 1927 ~ April 17, 2003

Sedan, Kansas – The funeral for Harold L. Thorne, 75, will be 10:30 AM Monday in the First Christian Church. The Rev. Penny Goldberg will officiate. Burial with military rites by Fort Riley Honor Guard will be in Fairview Cemetery at Niotaze, Kansas. Arrangements are by David W. Barnes Funeral Home.

He was born September 6, 1927, in Goltry to George William and Grace Angeline Wayman Thorne and died Thursday, April 17, 2003 at St. John's Medical Center in Tulsa from injuries in an automobile accident.

At age 4, he moved with family to a farm near Nash. He graduated from Nash high school in 1946. In August 1946, he joined the Army, serving in the 7th Calvary and was stationed near Tokyo, Japan. He was honorably discharged in December 1947. On January 29, 1948, he married Frances Loreen Delano at Wichita, Kansas. They lived in Chicago, Illinois, for four months, then moved to Nash where he worked on a farm. They later moved to Colorado. He was employed by Messenger doing farm work. In 1950s, the couple moved north of Niotaze. He farmed and ranched and hauled water, then worked in the oil fields. He served as Chautauqua County Commissioner and owned John Deere Implement dealership for a short time. He had lived at Berniece the past 10 years.

Surviving are one daughter, Susan Wade of Peru, Kansas; one son, Danny of Havana, Kansas; one sister, Ruby Ackley of Canton; six grandchildren; and five great – grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife on December 1, 1984, one son and one sister.

Memorials may be made through the funeral home to American Cancer Society.
