He was raised and educated in Clay Center, Nebraska, where he was an all-state athlete in football and baseball. He was an Eagle Scout and a Boys State candidate in 1962.

He attended the University of Nebraska and was a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity and ROTC program, graduating in 1969.

Dr. Thomas took great pride in the care he gave his patients and had immense respect for his employees, especially Sue Peterson, who worked with him for over 27 years.

He enjoyed gardening, golfing, hunting, sports, and had a great love for Husker football. He most enjoyed his grandchildren, whom called him "Grandpa Bert."

He is survived by his wife, of 48 years, Coral Ann (Hunter) Thomas, daughter Stacey Elizabeth Thomas Morales and husband Scotty, of Birmingham, Alabama; son Ryan Hunter Thomas and wife Rachelle, of Weatherford, Texas; three grandchildren, Hunter Morales, Harry Morales, and Molly Thomas; sister Sheila Thomas Grummert and husband Mike of McPherson, Kansas; and numerous nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Babe and Dale Thomas, brother, Steven R. Thomas, niece, Paige Thomas, nephew Jonathan Grummert, and in-laws Robert and Florence (Corl) Hunter, of Hastings, Nebraska.

Memorials may be made in his name to Boy Scouts of America Troup 79, in honor of his grandsons Hunter (Life Scout) and Harry (Tenderfoot Scout), with Brown-Cummings Funeral Home serving as custodians of the funds.
