Hattie V. (Shreck) Tate

Hattie V. (Shreck) Tate, 92 years old, passed away on February 13, 2014 in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. Born September 18, 1921 in Acadia California to Lewis Remy Shreck Jr. and Stella Pearl Glentzer Shreck.

In 1929, her family moved from California back to the family farm near the town site of Ruby in Nowata County Oklahoma.

She claimed she lived a pretty normal life on the farm but was always aware her family had it better than most during the depression. She was proud of how her family tried to help others in the area through those hard times.

She attended elementary school in a one room school house near the farm and graduated from Nowata High School in 1940.

She decided to leave the family farm to go to college (her father wanted her to stay closer to the farm), where she graduated from Coffeyville Junior College in 1943 with an Associate in Arts Degree.

During World War II, she moved back out to California and worked as a civil servant and taught dance at an Arthur Murray Dance studio. After the war she was helping a friend move to St Louis, Missouri when she decided to stay and live in St. Louis, where she taught dance and worked at various firms.

As the story goes, Hattie met William F. Tate after the war when he won a free dancing lesson at an Arthur Murray Dance Studio in St. Louis. Hattie was his dance instructor. Hattie married William F. Tate in St. Louis, Missouri on July 5, 1948.

Hattie and William settled in St. Ann, Missouri where they raised their family. In the 1960's and 1970's, Hattie started her own successful business (Tate Secretarial Service) working from home to raise her kids.

In 1976, Hattie moved the family to Bartlesville, Oklahoma where she started a new career at Phillips Petroleum Company at the age of 55. Hattie retired from Phillips Petroleum Company in 1991 with 15 years of service at the age of 70.

In her retirement years she never really retired. She earned her real estate license and worked in real estate. She was an advocate for Women and Children in Crisis for many years in the community. She was a volunteer Coordinator doing tax returns at the Washington County Senior Citizens Center. She was very active and involved at the 55+ Activity Center in Bartlesville where she developed some very endearing and close friendships.

Hattie was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, William F. Tate and her brother Lewis Remy Shreck III. She is survived by daughter, Susan Tate Dueber, son-in-law, Daniel Dueber and granddaughters, Angela Dueber, Sarah Dueber, and Stephanie Dueber and by son, William Lewis Tate, daughter-in-law Nancy Luthy and grandsons, Lucas Tate and Ryan Tate.

The world has lost an amazingly strong, courageous, beautiful and sassy woman.

Thank you for all of the love and support, games of chickenfoot and aggravation. Thank you for all the blackberry cobblers and wonderful pies. Thank you for being a wonderful mother, grandmother and friend.
You will be in our hearts forever as the person we aspire to be more like.

We will all miss you.
