Billy Ray Taliaferro

March 5, 1930 ~ January 2, 2022 

Billy Ray Taliaferro, 91, a resident of Good Samaritan Village in Denton, Texas, since May 2018, died Sunday, January 2, 2022 at Presbyterian Hospital, Denton after a brief illness.

Billy was born at Leon on March 5, 1930. A graduate of Leon High School, he earned degrees from Murray State College, Tishomingo, and Southeastern Oklahoma State University, Durant. He and Jane McAnally were married May 15, 1953 at Marietta. He served two years in the U.S. Army, honorably discharged as corporal in 1955.

After working in the oil field supply business for several years across Oklahoma and Texas, he spent most of his career in public education, serving as a teacher and elementary school principal at Windthorst and Archer City, Texas. He retired from Archer City Public Schools in 1996.

He was preceded in death by his twin sister, Alma Faye in December 1933 and his parents, Earnest and Haughty Taliaferro.

Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Jane McAnally; sons, Richard Stephen Taliaferro and wife Lisa of Poquoson, Virginia, and Alan Ray Taliaferro and wife Ellen of Dish, Texas; daughter, Lisa Marie Schlomach and husband Carlton of Haslet, Texas; bonus-son, Danny Sutton and wife Inez of Mansfield, Texas; brother, Charles Taliaferro of Stillwater; grandchildren, Angela Taliaferro and husband Dag Odegaard of Lierskogen, Norway, Sarah Taliaferro of El Sobrante, California, Kyle Taliaferro and wife Kendra of McKinney, Texas, Wes Taliaferro and wife Lauren of Carrollton, Texas, Benjamin Schlomach and wife Katy of New Braunfels, Texas, Lauren Schlomach of Decatur, Texas, and Kelley Schlomach of Fort Worth, Texas.

He was devoted to his family and found special joy returning often to the family farm in Leon. In Archer City, he was active in church and community activities including Meals on Wheels, Archer Service Center, and Archer City Thrift Store.

Mr. Taliaferro was a longtime member of the United Methodist Church, most recently Asbury United Methodist Church in Denton. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, January 8 with a memorial service following at 11 a.m. in the Asbury United Methodist Church sanctuary.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Asbury United Methodist Church, 117 Hercules Lane, Denton, Texas 76207, or a charity of one's choice.

This obituary included a photo of Mr. Taliaferro.
