Mary Viola (Swartz) Sump
January 30, 1948 ~ June 4, 2019

Mary Viola Sump, age 71, of Ponca City, Oklahoma passed away at home, surrounded by her family, on June 4, 2019.

A celebration of her life will be held on Monday, June 10, 2019 at 2pm at Eastern Heights Christian Church, with Pastor Mark Berry officiating. Access to the church can be made from Kyger Road.

Mary was born on January 30, 1948 in Monett, Missouri to Claude Kyle and Betty Mae (Bounous) Swartz. Mary attended Tonkawa Public Schools, before graduating from Northern Oklahoma College. On April 20, 1984, Mary and Ricardo Sump were married at the Blackwell Presbyterian Church in Blackwell, Oklahoma. Mary had several jobs during her life. She worked for GHR Manufacturing, Ponca Bowl, Huffy Bicycle Plant, Vacumaid and as a lab assistant at the Ponca City Hospital; where she retired. Her favorite and life-long career was being a loving wife, mother and grandmother.

Mary enjoyed, and was quite good at, painting, sewing and gardening. She spent many hours in her gardens watching the birds and butterflies and could name just about any plant or bird. She also enjoyed bowling and was a member of a bowling league for a time. Family vacations were always a joy for Mary. Many wonderful memories were made during the family vacations that will never be forgotten. Mary was also a long-time member of Eastern Heights Christian Church. She will be remembered as a kind, sweet person with a true heart of gold.

Survivors include: her husband, Rick Sump of Ponca City, Oklahoma; daughters; Jovona Powelson and her husband, Jon of Olathe, Kansas, Stephanie Green of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; grandchildren, Krizza Barth and her husband Robert, Kameron Powelson, Kacee Powelson; great-grandchildren, William, Lynndon and Kaydence; her mother, Betty Swartz of Sedan, Kansas; sister, Carolyn Medina Hawkins and her husband, Bert of Sedan, Kansas and brother, Claude Kyle Swartz, Jr. of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

She was preceded in death by her father.

Mary fought the fierce battle of metastatic breast cancer for nearly 16 years and fought with the spirit of a warrior. In lieu of floral tributes, memorial contributions may be made to Metavivor, Inc., 1783 Forest Drive #184, Annapolis, MD 21401.
