Royal Glen "Sonny" Stone

Royal Glen "Sonny" Stone
Jan 3, 1945 ~ Nov 2, 2014

Royal Glen "Sonny" Stone died peacefully in his sleep at his sister’s home on Sunday, November 2, 2014, in Sayre, Oklahoma, at the age of 69.

A memorial is scheduled for Wednesday, November 5, at the First Christian Church in Sayre. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Glen's life.

Glen was born on January 3, 1945, in Erick, OK, to Roy and Kate Stone. The youngest of ten children and the first of his family to attend college, he graduated from the University of Oklahoma in Norman in 1968, with a degree in Public Relations. He married Bethan Legate, his high school sweetheart in 1969.

He worked in the OU Sports Information office from 1963 to 1971, immersing himself into sports journalism. During this point in his career he also wrote for the Tulsa World and Daily Oklahoman newspapers. In 1971, Glen assumed his first director position within Sports Information at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, beginning a multi-decade career as a respected Sports Information Director during the emergent era of televised college athletics. In 1973, he left Southern Illinois University for the Sports Information Director post at Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas. In 1982, Glen moved his family to Fort Worth, Texas, for the Associate Athletic Director position in charge of Sports Information at Texas Christian University (TCU), where he spent 16 years. In 1998, he moved to the Media Relations department of the Colonial Golf tournament on the PGA tour. Before retirement in 2010, Glen closed his work career with Toyota of Fort Worth, TX.

The couple welcomed 2 children into their home and Glen set about teaching them to find and foster their passions. His children remember him as a kind and loving father, who encouraged them to pursue their goals.

Glen was an accomplished writer and won multiple awards for his collegiate athletics publications and marketing materials. He was a tireless worker with a wonderful sense of humor. He loved literature, and was passionate about college athletics and the imagery of the Old West. He was an early and active member of CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America), where he mentored many younger sports journalists. Before his passing, Glen penned his memoirs that included his colorful stories of growing up in a large, modest family, and high points of his career in college athletics at four universities.

Glen is survived by his wife, Bethan Legate Stone of Fort Worth, Texas; children: Casey Stone and wife Leigh Ann of Keller, Texas, Jared Stone and wife Alyson of Honolulu, Hawaii; grandchildren: Keylan and Ayana Stone of Keller, Texas, siblings: Frances “Jada” Stone Rickert of Harlingen, Texas, Pat Stone Tignor of Sayre, OK, and, numerous nieces and nephews, and beloved friends.

Memorial services will be Wednesday, November 5, 2014 at the Sayre First Christian Church at 2:00 PM. Condolences can be made online at www.whineryfs.com.
