James Richard Steffen, O.D.

March 28, 1962 ~ March 30, 2014

Dr. James Richard Steffen, O.D. Of Apache, Oklahoma Was born March 28, 1962 in Parsons, KS to James Cecil and Shirley Marie [Johnston] Steffen. He passed away at his home March 30th at the age of 52.

James moved to Elgin, OK with his family where he graduated from Elgin High School as Valedictorian of his class. He went to Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford where he graduated Magna Cum Laude with two Masters' Degrees in Biology/Chemistry and Education. He then attended Northeastern Oklahoma State University in Tahlequah where he received his O.D. in Optometry.

James taught science at several high schools in Oklahoma. He coached the Lahoma High School Debate Team to a State Championship when he taught there. He was a tremendous influence on the lives of his students, and he was devoted to helping them learn.

He was a member of the Lions Club, and the Tri-Beta Science Fraternity.

He received many academic and community awards and was recognized several times in Who's Who in America.

He loved to sing, and sang in the college choir as well as church choir wherever he attended church.

He is survived by:1 sister- Rebecca Steffen of West Chester, OH 1 half-sister- Nancy Hendrich-Steffen and husband, William Hendrich of Clinton, MO; His Aunt - Donna Johnson, of Parsons, KS.

He was preceded in death by:His parents.

In accordance with James' wishes, no memorial service will be held.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association and may be sent to Crews Funeral Home, PO Box 365, Apache, OK 73006.
