Thelma Stangeland
March 31, 1928 ~ October 25, 2016

Thelma Stangeland, resident of Ponca City, passed away October 25, 2016 at the age of 88. A memorial service will be held Saturday, October 29, 2016 at 2 pm at St. Luke's Church of the Nazarene in Ponca City, Oklahoma.

Thelma was born March 31, 1928 in El Dorado, Kansas. She attended El Dorado Public Schools where she graduated in 1947. She worked for SW Bell Telephone while in high school. She then attended Southern Nazarene University in Bethany, OK where she was an art major.

Thelma met her future husband, Gordon Stangeland, at SNU and they married August 31, 1951. They moved to Lawton, OK in 1951 while her husband served 2 years in the Army at Fort Sill. The couple then moved to Norman, OK while her husband attended graduate school. Later, they moved to Ponca City where she worked as a receptionist for Dr. Harold Jones for several years and also with Conoco Oil Company. She was very active at St. Luke's Church of the Nazarene. She loved working with children and frequently taught children's Sunday School class. She was also a greeter for many years. She enjoyed doing art work, along with helping raise her grandchildren. For 21 years, she looked forward to shopping and shows on her annual trips to Branson with her granddaughters.

She is survived by her husband Gordon, her sons Ron Stangeland and wife Lindi, Geron Stangeland and wife Becky, son-in-law John Cherry, grandchildren Carol Loeber and husband Matt, Melissa Stangeland, Laura Sweeney and husband Brian, Neil Stangeland and wife Amy, Bryan Stangeland and wife Deborah, Kristen Stangeland, Michael Cherry and Brianne Cherry and 2 great-grandchildren Nora and Nels Loeber.

She is preceded in death by her parents John and Leva McPherson, her daughter Jan Cherry, brothers Jack and Cleo McPherson, and sister Naomi McPherson.
