Duana Sue (Fulfer) Smith

Duana Sue (Fulfer) Smith
February 20, 1948 ~ December 11, 2021

Duana Sue (Fulfer) Smith passed into the loving arms of her Savior Jesus Christ on December 11, 2021, at home surrounded by her family after a brief illness at the age of 73.

She was born on February 20, 1948, to parents Duane and Marie (Jameson) Fulfer in La Junta, CO, the third of four children. They later moved to Gruver, TX where she was a free-spirited girl who enjoyed FHA, basketball, cheerleading, and Girls State. Sue easily made friends and enjoyed several life-long friendships from her early years. After graduating from Gruver High School in 1966, she attended McMurry University in Abilene, TX and Panhandle State University in Goodwell, OK.

At PSU she met her devoted companion and sparring partner for life, Chuck Smith. They married in Woodward, OK at the Methodist church on August 18, 1967, and made their home on a ranch north of Woodward in Harper County for fifty-four years. Ranch living provided her with the sense of ownership, growth, isolation, and security she had always craved. Sue thrived on raising their children Tammy and Zan, running the household, and providing hot meals. She loved shopping for antiques, going to auctions, and fostering all manner of seemingly unlovable pets. Her highly analytical mind, attention to detail, uncanny ability to display her collections, and her impeccable style were important elements of her strong personality. She was a devoted mother, a loyal wife, and a trusted friend who would go above and beyond for anyone the Lord laid on her heart or put in her path.

A classy woman with a bulldog spirit, Mom came to love the Lord in 1982, and this relationship drove her for the rest of her life. Anyone who knew her can appreciate the balance of ferocity, dignity, and grace behind her intense green eyes. She was a Spirit-filled Christian, an avid prayer warrior, and reader/researcher of the Word, having recently finished reading the Bible in its entirety for the tenth time, though she would never want that mentioned. Sue held those around her to a high standard and usually got the best from people. Her strength, generosity, and independence will be remembered by many.

Mom dearly loved her children and grandchildren and so rejoiced in them and all of their accomplishments. What a legacy of competitive game-playing, homemade meals, and storytelling traditions to leave behind!

Sue is survived by brother Jay Fulfer and his wife Susan of Midland, Texas; sister Joy Moore and husband Doug of Texas; husband Chuck Smith of the home; daughter Tammy Charmasson and husband Kevin; son Zan Smith, all of Woodward; and three grandsons: Tucker Covalt of Mustang, OK; Corby Covalt and wife Kelsey of Norman, OK; Dax Covalt of Norman, OK; as well as several nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Duane and Marie Fulfer, and her beloved brother Joe Fulfer.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, December 14, 2021, at the Billings Funeral Home in Woodward from 5:00 pm until 7:00pm.
