Lt. Col. Justin Welch "Cowboy" Shires

Cancer claims Shires

Lt. Col. Justin Welch "Cowboy" Shires, USAF Ret., age 81, passed away on January 16, 2007 after a long bout with cancer.

He was preceded in death by his wife Mary Jane.

He is survived by his daughter Judy Alva of Bulverde, daughter Janet Shires, and son Justin L. Shires, both of San Antonio; sisters Lola Beth Rogers of Lubbock and Mattie Lee Shires of Houston; granddaughters Holly Rebolle of San Antonio and Heather McGarity of Killeen; and five great grandchildren.

Shires was born in Chickasha, Oklahoma on May 24, 1925. He served 30 years in the Air Force, and was a WW II vet. He was also a pilot and a member of the Inspection General Team, and he served in Air Rescue. He spent time in the Azores, Okinawa, and many states in the U.S.

Shires was an avid R. V. traveler, attending Air Force squadron reunions as well as recreational travels with his R. V. groups. The past five years he was a volunteer at Brooks Army Medical Center. He will be deeply missed by many.

Shires was interred with military honors in the Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas.
